Technology Deficient

So I was asked to look at an old laptop that a co-worker had to see what was wrong with it. It is an IBM 600x, 500 mhz/256 memory. First I love IBM laptops, they just take a beating and keep running. I was getting numerous error codes upon boot and discovered that both the HD and the mouse pointer had died. The machine would not boot through with out it. I had a 40 gb hd and found a new keyboard for $6 on ebay and got it working.

In the interim while waiting on the keyboard to arrive, she orders a new laptop and tells me, keep it. . I'm thinking, fantastic a new Linux platform. I order a 512 mb memory module just waiting for it to arrive, and installed Xubuntu as I can't get Ubuntu to install due to the low memory. Best part, got my wireless card to finally work.

I just love them people that have no clue, I have gotten more free gear that way and now I have a mobile Linux machine. Life is good.

Just think, next you can show everybody how to format those cool 100mb Zip discs over a dial up modem.

Nice! Yeah, those old IBM laptops are pretty bulletproof. Not a bad deal picking one up for what amounted to a couple of dollars. Plenty of hardware to run Linux, too. At least in a slimmed-down fashion.

I'm sure he could, if that made any sense.
