Don't forget about using a firewall app such as ZoneAlarm and a spyware app such as Ad-Aware.
As you download more and more Windows, Office, IE, and other updates, you must realize these
may allocate more of your system's memory; you should buy more more memory or at least increase
virtual memory. You should also remove/close unnecesssary or unused applets in your sys tray
(bottom right corner) Also, you can uninstall add-on search bars that soemtimes get installed free
with other software.

Don't forget about cleanup in IE viaTools > Internet Options. Follow this with Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

Also, see if you have multiple pop-up blockers installed.
Uninstall sofwtare you don't need; some auto-start polling/listening applets
under windows task manager.

There should be some shareware tools out there to analyze yor system and or help cleanup
windows registry.
Sure, a car works just fine right off the lot from the dealership. Same as a Windows based computer works just fine when you haul it home from the big-box electronics store.

Now, drive your car around and never change the oil, filters, belts, plugs, wires, and leave it unlocked with the windows down and the keys on the front seat everywhere you park it. Why, that's insane... right?
How is that different than not maintaining your computer through virus and spyware scans, not updating your patches for all your software, and not running any firewall protection?
i do all that and i'm still having problems. i know MS is trying to write decent stuff. i know MS is the target because they own the industry. i have simply decided to go to someone else who can do this better. i'm hopefully going to buy something that does what i want it to do, better

again, i'll agree. but my requirements aren't such that i need to upgrade a machine every 2-3 years. documents, spreadsheets, the internet, a phone program, and itunes. a machine i buy today will be able to do that ten years from now just fine. there comes a point where further advancement is not needed. i don't need the computer to do any more than the above for me.

that's my point; i don't have any viruses. i don't download programs, i don't surf porn, i don't open unknown e-mail. norton has found one virus in three years, and i quite honestly don't even know where it came from. and i clean all the cookies out every week. so i'm fairly sure it's not a virus

yes, you have to maintain the computer. but this point is over the top. they didn't offer computer driving classes when i went to school. while you do need to maintain your machines, a computer isn't a car. i don't need a license to get on here and post. and if they ever make it illegal to drink and post, buddy, i'm gonna be a serial offender! i'm not asking a computer to do anything like what i expect out of a car. the bar is pretty low, in my opinion. and it's not reaching the minimum requirements. i'm gonna see if apple can.

i think i'm just gonna get the regular macbook. i don't need the extras that come with the pro. i like the new air a lot, because i travel for a living, but it's only 2 pounds lighter than the macbook and i think you have to pay extra for the cd player. if that's true, that ticks me off

I don't blame you. I made the, in retrospect, huge mistake of purchasing a machine with Windows Vista installed. I'm sorry to any Microsoft apologist here but, while I never had any great difficulties with XP, Vista is a piece of crap. There's no such thing as "plug and play" hardware when it comes to Vista. It won't recognize anything and all the manuals, etc., appear to assume that everything will work just dandy and no problems will ever arise. They describe what SHOULD happen but rarely what DOES.

All in all, I'd damn near give my life savings for the opportunity to kick Bill Gates in the balls, really hard, just once.

When did you buy the machine, and which version of Vista does it have? I'm a big proponent of Microsoft products, but I'll be the first to put Vista Home Basic in the same bin with Windows ME. Vista Basic is a pile of cripple-ware garbage, and it gets installed on machines that are listed as "Vista Capable", which means they have the minimum requirements to run Vista Basic.
I asked when you bought it, because even though Vista's been out for a while, companies are still playing catch-up with their drivers. When Vista first came out, lots of companies hadn't shelled out the cash to get the APIs so they could write compatible PnP drivers to be bundled with the OS. No matter if it was Home Basic, or Vista Ultimate, people ended up with Wacom tablets and 3-in-one printers that were nothing more than a fancy paperweight after the upgrade. The list is growing for compatibility, but it's still not as all-inclusive as the XP list.

As far as I've heard, Bill Gates is not really a pleasant person to be around in a social setting. (My fiancee works for the company and knows a few people who are close with Bill.) So I'm not opposed to you booting him in his hacky-sack, as long as you post a video of it for us.

Ugh, i had a nice long detailed response to post and i hit the "back" button and lost it all...

Here's the abbreviated version since i don't feel like typing it all out again:

Don't downlod/open any e-mail you don't recongnize. Send them straight to hell, er, the trash/recycle bin.

Don't download/open any files you don't recognize. If you do accidentally download something, send them straight to hell, er, the trash/recycle bin.

Run a spyware/malware program regularly. My favorite is Spyware Search & Destroy. http://www.safer-networking.org/

Unless it's your job to browse through illicit websites or use suspicious software on a regular basis, you don't need to have an anti-virus running in the background if you're smart/safe about your computer use. However it's a good job to run an anti-virus scan once in a while. Grisoft has a free version of their AVG Anti-Virus which works just as good as the bigger names without feeling like it gets in the way of your computer use (Norton and Macafee are good but just feel so freakin' oppressive). http://free.grisoft.com/

I had Windows XP on my old computer but switched to Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate when i built my new one and haven't looked back. Having decent computer specs really helps Vista run smoothly. I've got an Athlon64 X2 6000+, 4GB of memory, 500GB hard drive, and SLI GeForce 8800GT videocards.

I have the Vista Home Premium version. In truth, I've been able to work around many of the difficulties that I've encountered (although, that is still an ongoing process, so I'm not declaring victory yet). I got the machine from Dell in November, and I purposely avoided going bargain basement on components. Being obsolete in four to five years, I can handle. Being obsolete, next week? Not so much.

My biggest obstacle has been getting the system to recognize peripherals--digital camera, mp3 player, etc. Too often, Vista asks for driver updates when there is no driver or recognizes the peripheral, installs the software, but can't connect the two.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm no propeller-head. But frankly, I've got no desire to become intimately familiar with how computers work or why. For me, it's a tool, just like a telephone. I expect to plug the phone into the wall and have it work. If the phone company were to tell me my phone will work fine as long as I stand on one foot while using it, I wouldn't be happy. Likewise, if Microsoft tells me I've got to do all sorts of gymnastics to make their product work (when they've previously represented the ease of it all), I'm not happy.

And as for Bill Gates getting the kick in the groin, I'd be happy to post video, but Vista probably wouldn't recognize the video camera.

I wanted: MacBook Pro /Leopard
I bought: Dell XPS M1330 /Vista (the OS I swore I would never get) Home Premium.
Why: more stuff runs on Windows, I like VS.
To do: remove AV software and install free firewall. (I hate AV sw).

Other laptop (XP SP2) has no AV or any security products at all, working fnie for 2 years. And no slow down. Desktop PC (XP SP2), 2 minor problems in 6 years (one is on-going, due to bluetooth device making things stupidly slow). Will install Ubuntu.

All my machines are running Firefox (thanks Mozilla, we love you).

In 2 months, my dream may come true when I buy a MBP.

That's been the largest complaint field I've heard of with Vista: Interoperability and driver compatability. Either the machine won't recognize something that is installed properly, or can't recognize a device at all. Unfortunately, the blame lies in two places for that one... Microsoft mostly, for making their prices so cost prohibitive that companies don't want to pay the exhorbitant rates for inclusion in the first installation rev's of the OS, and less with the companies that don't develop for the upcoming platforms; but still... you know the change is inevitable, so just write the danged drivers.
I've been lucky that everything I have works with Vista, but I don't use things like my camera dock on my Vista machine since I have a card-reader slot right in the front panel. I bet my camera dock wouldn't work well with Vista since it's pretty old. I haven't tried using my 1st gen 5GB iPod with the Vista machine... Maybe I'll give that a shot and see if anything bungs up with it.

Good luck with that. I tried an iPod on my machine, and I never could get it to function. (It was nothing to do with the iPod because it worked like clockwork on my prior XP-running machine.) After banging my head against it for an age and spending an hour and a half on the phone with Apple tech support doing basically all the same stuff I'd already tried on my own, I wrote it off and returned the iPod for a refund. Several folks seem to have come up with solutions to this problem, but nothing seems to work for everyone. I don't know why that is, but, like I said, I'm no propeller-head.
