What to do in Rhode Island?

Might be going with the wife to Rhode Island this summer. Never been anywhere east. What is there to do in R.I. and/or the surrounding area?

Where in RI? Newport's nice. There's good road biking there and about 45 minutes west is a place called Arcadia that's got some good mountain biking.

If you mean other than biking, there's beaches, sailing, shopping, historical stuff, mansions (Newport) etc.

Go sailing on a wooden boat, go lobstering, eat great seafood, drink beer, learn how to talk funny.

There is a lot to do in RI and Boston, and the Ct Coast is not very far away. You've got historic newport mansions, wineries, sailing, scuba diving, the tennis hall of fame, the mystic seaport is just a short drive down the highway and one of the coolest aquariums in Mystic, Ct. Great beaches in Rhode Island and CT. This is my neck of the woods. So feel free to PM me if you want more suggestions. And of course....there is lots of great road biking to be had.

Visit Bailey, of course! That would be the first thing on my list.

    Drive through it?

That's all I've ever done in it... I was like two at the time and, as my mother tells me, I vomited all the way through it. Fortunately it's a small state.

depends on which direction he's traveling...
southbound? Keep on going till you hit GA! Then get out your bike, call me, and lets hit the mountains.
Northbound? turn around and go southbound!

And bring your bike. You can rent some on the island too. Providence has turned out to be a real nice city. You like Italian food? Then by all means go to Federal Hill. The only better or just as good Italian is in San Francisco IMHO. You may as well go to Boston too. Thats the cool thing about New England you can see a lot since it's all so close.

All the above applies, but since no one has mentioned it, try to check out Water Fire if you can catch it while you're in Providence. I don't think the 2008 schedule is posted yet, but you can get more info here: http://www.waterfire.org/

    That's a FACT JACK!!

Just started reading the replies, but Newport is sounding good.

Never heard of Block Island. I'll Google it and see what I can find.
