I could have sworn that I started this scan yesterday.

Started a scan of my computer 2 and a half hours ago. It was 10:30 when it started and it's now 1am here in NJ and it's STILL scanning.

3 hours in and it's still doing a virus scan. I wish it would finish so I can go sleep.

See the rest of us set up definitions as to what to do when a virus is found, run it, and go to bed. O_o

I just set it up and crash. Its not uncommon for a thorough scan to take 4-8 hours, especially on a machine that has tons of stuff on it.

Depends on the program too. Some programs by default scan every single program on the system, others only scan certain file types (.exe, .dll, .msi.)

My virus scan (Norton 2005) takes about 4 hours, too. My computer has about 70 Gbytes of files on its internal HD, and about 125 Gbytes on an external HD, for a total of about 1,070,000 files. I have it set up to run starting at 2:00am on Saturdays.

I start several scanning programs at night and then I sleep. Voila, the computer is shipshape in the morning.

I don't have a virus scanner. I have OpenBSD. Running on a Mac no less.
