How do you stay in shape during winter ...

With all the rains here in California, I started to wonder how everyone else trains when you don't have the opportunity of dry roads. For those in Canada, and on the east coast (especially where there is nothing but snow), how do you stay in shape, so that you can tackle those mountainous rodes?

You can burn fat by adding muscle. Lift weights in the off season. You can also do intervals on the trainer. That will help burn fat. And you can eat less. You have to keep up the cardio indoors or even cross train by skiing, snowboarding, crosscountry, anything. Improvise.

I ski. Now that the Holidays are over I'm getting to the gym a couple days a week, and I have a trainer and rollers in the basement (about once a week). I should be on the bike today; 30s and sunny....

I run (2-3x a week). I find that my running temperature threshold to be much lower. I've run in -10*C, but wouldn't want to even think of rising my bike at such low temperatures.
I also downhill ski and am thinking of picking up cross country, as that is suppose to really improve cardiovascular fitness.

It's called Winter Cycling. We even have a forum entitled such. The sad part is that you are in California and not riding? If you only knew how angry that makes the rest of us feel that are in the cold climates.

I used to ride through the winters...when I was younger and was racing. Now, as an old man, I ride in the late mornings to get the warmer parts of the day, ride 'cross in the wodds so the wind it not as intense, or ride a fixed on the rollers and try to spin so that my butt does not bounce uncontrolably.

I try to eat less, but that's hard...

Crank... Have you finally taken my advice to HTFU and ride ?

I ride 30 km a day in the winter... I think my shape is actually better than it was when I was riding 50 km a day in the summer since winter riding is far more intense workout.

Besides that...my work is akin to spending 8-10 hours a day in a gym lifting weights so there's little chance I could ever get out of shape.

Round is a shape. Seriously, I lost about 50 pounds by bike commuting from Sept '06 to November '07 or so. Now I seem to have gained 15 of those back since I switched to shorter bike routes that integrate the bus system with my commute. Oh well. Spring's on its way!

When I get some decent tires. Winter+slicks=NO.

Up until this year, I did MMA. Then I realized losing 20+ pounds of fat is WAY easier than losing 20+ pounds of muscle.
