    How STUPID is this?

I have some friends planing a trip out here in Colorado. They are flying in from Boston, so I'm checking some airfares for the dates they want to visit. I check United, they are about $450 for a round trip ticket from Boston to Denver. I check near by airports and they have tickets for about $250 from Boston to Colorado Springs.
Here's the thing. The flight from Boston to Colorado Springs STOPS in Denver!
It's $450 to fly Boston to Denver, it's $250 to be on the SAME plane, except once you stop in Denver, you need to stay on the plane, and fly 20 minutes to Colorado Springs. What the ****?
I told them to just buy a ticket to Colorado Springs, pack everything in a cary on and just get off in Denver.
    Stupid

I can't get a direct flight from Bozeman to Denver to see my family. It's 50 mins to SLC, then another 1:15 to Denver from there. Over two hours in the air and 1 hour sitting in SLC while they febreze the seats on the plane that I just came in on... only to climb right back on it, only a different seat.

I flew to Austin from Bozeman a few years back... Bozeman-->Denver-->Austin. The flight from Bozeman to Denver took 58 mins.

I got the cheapest rate to Chicago from SLC by booking a flight to Frankfurt Germany with a layover in Chicago last year. The catch was that if you had checked baggage, it would go to Germany. I just had two carry on so it wasn't a problem.
    Crazy how the airlines work.

There is, according to what I've read and heard. The airlines do NOT like for you to do that, for whatever reason. And if they notice, they're liable to revoke any return ticket you have, which would end up costing lots of money!

You purchased the seat, regardless of showing up or NOT, it's yours. If you want to use it that way, you should rightfully be able to.

    Unfortunately, the Airlines disagree.

I was wondering how the return trip would go. I think it would be harder to board in Denver when you were not on the first leg.

I rented a car from Hertz at BWI some years ago. I needed it for 4 days. They had a weekly special that was much cheaper than my 4 day rental would cost. When I asked, the clerk politely explained that the special was for the full week only. I replied, that I will take it for the full week but will park it in your lot the last 3 days. She said no. I did ask to speak to the manager and got it resolved, but still....

They should never have deregulated the airlines. 'Nuff said.

Yeah, "should...be", but the airlines are in control and do pretty much what they want. And, these days, if you complain about anything, they might invoke "Homeland Security" and get you arrested.

I can top y'all! I had to fly to Chattanooga a few years ago and had to fly from Indianapolis to LA to Atlanta to Chattanooga. Total time in travel was 8 hours and 55 minutes. I've driven it in 7!

Not surprising! I routinely travel between Philly and Boston, which I used to fly. But for the past year or so, I've been taking Amtrak. About the same price (even for the Acela), only an hour longer (when you factor in getting to the airport, going through security, and waiting for the inevitable delays), you get 500% more leg room, a prettier view, and you have access to AC power for the laptop. And- you are "free to move about the cabin" any damn time you want. A MUCH more civilized way to travel.

+1. The people on a train seem a lot calmer and seem to be people you don't mind being in a closed area with for a long period of time, as opposed to the masses crammed into the planes who at best are in a pissed off mood, and at worst are trying to cram 2-3 babies (or 300-400 pounds of hairy blubber) onto a single seat.

Friends are visiting in April. They don't ski, we're going to do some backpacking though. My brother's coming in February to do some skiing.
