Freakin snow days

I think this is about the 5th or 6th snow day this year that the kids have had off. All for 5" of snow!!! Crazy. At this point the school year will go another week into June.

Now I'm feeling my age... does anyone else remember as a kid having very few snow days? I grew up in Colorado and we maybe had 5 snow days my entire K-12 schooling.

My son woke up last Sunday, noticed it was snowing, and asked if he had a snow day...

I grew up in ND and remember having maybe 5 snow days during my 13 years of schooling there. I remember riding to school through drifts that were over hub high.
Now I live in KY and they call off the schools if they even think there might possibly be a slight chance of a snowflake falling anywhere in the surrounding 5 counties.

Exactly. Do the schools think that parents get "snow days" too? I get to either a. pay a sitter (and hope one is available) or b. take a vacation day or c. not get paid.

5 snow days = half of my vacation time for the year

Our kids have had a lot of snow days off, all this week so far. Not sure how many total, but definitely more than 5.

When they come in the store I tease them that they'll be going to school all Summer. Heh.

I work behind the main front desk on campus and starting the day before - if there is even a hint on tv as to a big storm coming - or if it starts snowing heavy ... the ladies phones at the front desk light up and do not stop ringing - asking if the nighttime classes are cancelled as well if the campus will be closed the next day.

College rarely closes - and if it does it may only close a couple hours early ...

My college (K-State) was nearly the only school (including multiple colleges) in a 200 mile radius that still had classes yesterday.

That's exactly what I feel like, an old crumudgen. "Kids these days, they are so soft!"

I went 1-8 in Harrisonburg Virginia. I was amazed when we moved back down to NC for school to be canceled because it was really cold... a chance of snow. None had even fallen yet.

I was just commenting to someone about this.

When I was a kid, we always had so much snow. The snowbanks between the road and the sidewalk were so high that even as a teenager you couldn't see over them. We had enough snow to build a ramp off the deck every year. And cold, too. Every day was below zero in the winter.

Nowadays, if we get 3 inches of snow the whole world shuts down and people start to cry when it's 20 degree above zero! And I live in the same place!

I only remember one snow day when the Governor closed the schools because it was something like 35 below, without wind chill.

I remember going to school one day, 4th or 5th grade, wearing 2 snowsuits and shoveling out the driveway with my mother and sister so we could get the car out. With windchill it was -90.
