If I were forced to go out with you Jon, then yes, I would poke my eyes out with a serving fork.

I would just start talking about my upcoming mission, and the fact that I love pink.

Just say, this is first date you've had since your genital wart break out has cleared up. That should do the trick, in most cases.

I'd go home and take serious stock of myself.

Dating is pretty serious business; unfortunately most look at it like a hassle, and therefore end up on blind dates with Ru Paul.

I've never considered dating to be serious business. You go out for drinks or dinner with someone and sometimes you hit it off and sometimes you don't. I've never understood people thinking that dating is serious.

+10000

It's the people who take dating serious that complain about how horrible dating is and are sooooo terrified of ending up alone.

The dating part is not serious. Hiding the evidence from teh wife, that is the serious part.

Really? Do you also update your resume in crayon?

It's really about figuring out what you want and making a game plan to get it- it's not about leaving things to a chance connection. It doesn't have to be totally serious, but it does require some inward-looking honesty and maybe some hard-work to get where you want to be.

IMHO too many people just want someone to accept them without trying to improve themselves ("there's someone for everyone") and in a situation that could dictate the ebb and flow of the next 40+ years of your life that's a pretty lazy way to go about it.

Be a gentleman. Don't hurt someone's feelings. Some folks are not the most attractive but you agreed to the date don't be superficial about it. Now if it is a guy in drag then you might not want to go on the date and that is understandable! Looks like Ru Paul you say? Hmmmm?

That's not taking it seriously, it's more of a knee-jerk fear mentality.

Guys, don't get me confused here. By "taking dating seriously" I mean that you take yourself seriously and take action to be that right person in the right place. If you can do that the dating part is actually rather easy because you'll then be attracting the right people.

I've watched far too many people hurry up and "get it over with" only to end up miserable in the end.

Meh. Maybe, but there's plenty of merit in just going out with a girl to see if there's a connection. I've dated plenty of girls that I've just met randomly in different places and had absolutely no expectations of how the night would go. If it ended up with her cooking breakfast in the morning, then so be it; but, if it ended up with me ending the date early and calling up a f*** buddy, then that was cool, too. I think placing so much value on dating is exactly what makes people end up miserable when things don't work out.

The girl I'm with now is probably one of the most fantastic human beings I've ever met in my life, but when we went on our first date, I was not one bit placing any kind of expectation on it at all. The fact that I found out pretty quickly what an amazing person she is actually made me want to work for our relationship. On the flip side, I could not imagine if I took every date seriously. Seems like a lot of trouble for no good reason.

I think you are confusing dating with being in a serious relationship.
