Ooo Don't mess with his bike!!

Some of you know that my co-worker is now commuting to work on his bike. (I had a thread on this).

ANYWAY....

He goes to a convenience store, leaves the bike outside unlocked but was just on the other side of the window. Some guy walks aggressively up to the bike and is looking suspicious. So my buddy goes out there real quick and asks him what's up. The guy says to him something to the effect of "Don't trip, man. I'm only checking out your bike." My buddy replies with "Yeah you got that 'YOUR BIKE' part right." And gets on it to leave.

The guy grabs my friend by the back of his collar and yanks him back, and off of the bike. (Keep in mind, my buddy here is not a small guy).

My friend throws his bike forward, turns, and RIGHT before the guy starts to say something smart mouth to him,

WHAM!!!

My co-worker busts the guy's nose.

He waits for the cops and the guys is wriggling on the floor with his hands covering his face, trying to yell between the spurts of red fluid spraying out of his face with each breath.

Dang.

The person who throws the first good shot that connect os apt to win the confrontation! The laying on of hands gives your friend leave to pop him! So it goes. I hope your friends knuckles don't swell up too much!

This bike must be the best bike in the world for him to get into a fight over it.

It's the only bike he has.

A Raleigh M600.

More than anything I think it's the fact that the guy grabbed him first from behind and yanked him backwards off of the bike.

I would have done the same thing regardless of what I was riding.

The whole being grabbed from behind would warrant some proactive defence.

To boot, the guy who physically grabbed from behind committed a criminal offence. Siu's friend should press assault (and perhaps attempted theft) charges and perhaps consider a lawsuit (because in a lot of places, there are civil penalties for assault, even if there were no injuries.)

Come on, no one thought of this yet?

Hey you guys!

If I'm by myself I never leave the bike outside. If they don't want a bike in the store they don't get my business.

I'm on the side of the guy who administered the beatdown.

Funny story about the last time someone snuck up and grabbed me:
I was standing at an ATM waiting for my transaction to go through. A buddy of mine thought it was a good idea to sneak up, yell something and grab my shoulder. I elbowed him in the face, broke his cheek and knocked out 2 teeth. I almost felt bad about it when I turned around and realized it was supposed to be a joke.

I just realized something. Your co-worker could have killed that guy. If someone hits your nose in an up and in direction, the bone spliners and all the pieces get driven into the brain. *note to self* hit nose in a downwards motion

That's nothing to concern yourself with. Highly unlikely.

Can't say I feel sorry for the guy with the broken nose, however your buddy should reconsider his choices next time. Screwy things can happen in the legal system these days. Glad he kept his bike.

I'm not sure Siu's friend did the right thing. But since I wasn't there to see it, I can't really know for sure.
Violence used to defend should be on par with the violence inflicted by the aggressor. A punch straight in the face, cracking the nose is waaay over the top for being yanked backwards.

That's awesome your friend stood up for himself and didn't rollover!

Wrong.

Nose=cartilage. Never going to happen.

Siu , it seems like there is a scumball around every corner in your neck of the woods. That kinda stuff just doesn`t happen were I live. I guess I`m very lucky.

But if something like that did happen to me I would have nailed him several more times for resisting

I remember standing with my friend at the lunch line in school. This guy behind us was saying stupid, childish things about my friend. Before it gets too heated my friend turns around and drops the guy with one punch. BAM! I don't remember him getting in trouble either.

I always wished that I could react like that sometimes.

so...Would a .45 be wrong in this situation? Not if your state has a "castle doctrine" law. Basically if anyone makes you fear your life (getting grabbed off a bike would make me fear my life) you can use any force necessary to save YOUR life.

I live in NY, so i would have just put the guys head into the pavement

I really do live in a bad area. The crime rate is very high here.
