    Gucci Crap

I'm in the market for a new wallet. I've seen plenty of $200+ wallets at the department stores. I am not entirely opposed to paying that much if I have some sort of objective justification for why I am paying more than, say, $50.

Then I see crap like this:

    http://www.styledrops.com/handbags-22143.html

over $200 for a keychain that says Gucci. Which supports my long-held theory that everything made by Gucci is overpriced crap. I think this is marketing -- companies like that are targeting that small region in the brain that gets satisfaction from spending money, with no correlation to quality.

Hey, they make some cool Tyvek wallets that are of course so thin and waterproof that you can carry them when you ride. That's my next wallet (in about a week or two, mine's falling apart). Gucci, Moochie, hootchie cootchie, who needs it?

Its probably a cheap taiwanese knock-off too. Who knows nowadays.

I can't help wondering that if they feel the need to say -

"Styledrops.com sells just real Gucci men's wallets items. We proudly stand behind the authenticity and quality of all merchandise sold on our site. We guarantee each and every product offered for sale on our site to be brand new, genuine and authentic."

Haven't purchased a wallet for a man in quite a while - and I've purchased some $20ish wallets for the ex-husband and I'm pretty sure I got him (on one excessive year - besides a $300 or so leather jacket for the harley, and other things) a leather wallet that was probably $40 - I would not have done more than that for a wallet. Jacket, chaps, gloves yes. Wallet - no. It lasted probably just as long as the rest of the less expensive ones to tell you the truth (which it lasted for a few years before wearing out). Guess that is one item I don't do much with (hehe, sayin I don't have much $$ ). I don't even do much with that myself as I'm so much on the bike (commuter) and carrying stuff to work - I'm in a backpack or have some nice over the shoulder bags to carry stuff in. Do have a couple of nice purses (no real wallet though), but those sit idle ...

Ah, paying for nothing but a name.

Even better, thinking a logo somehow correlates to fashion or importance.

Beats me. Why would someone pay hundreds of dollars for an item with the same logos on it, when the identical, yet unadorned, item next to it is a tenth the price?

At least the Oldsmobile is intentionally funny.

I buy my wallets at Target. I like them and I like the price. For some reason, I don't have a problem paying $200-300 for a purse for the wife. Funny how that works.

A friend of mine who works in the bag industry says the luxury stuff isn't necessarily as overpriced as people make it out to be. He says a lot of bags/wallets/whatever are marked up about 10 times over their raw production price. It's not all profit -- you have to factor in transportation and other costs. Anyway, a decent (edit: nice leather) wallet probably costs about 5 bucks to make, meaning that it's 50 bucks by the time you buy it in a store.

A Gucci wallet, which uses better materials and stitching, might cost 20 bucks to make — hence the $200 price tag. It's possible that they mark up the price a bit more than 10 times on some luxury goods, but it's often the case that that's actually how much these things should cost, as ridiculous as that seems.

Plus, there was that article in the Economist a few weeks ago pointing to research showing that people on the whole derive more pleasure from more expensive things — they really think that the same bottle of wine tastes better when they're told it's more expensive. So just look at that $200 as an investment in your personal happiness

Next time any of you are in Kyoto, I'll take you for a walk through Daimaru and Itetan. You'll then understand the meaning "sickingly" expensive. By the way, my daughter's school bag will cost around $400. That's life here. (It is not unusual for parents to pay up to $800 for one)

Hey - 25 years ago a bought a Gucci watch at the Navy Exchange in Hawaii. It wasn't especially expensive, and it was quite a nice watch. I'd still be using it if I had been a bit more careful with it and hadn't gotten it a little nicked up.

Not that I would buy one, but I know several women with gucci bags, and their logic is that it is guaranteed for life. They will replace or repair the bag forever. Plus, women's purses are expensive to begin with, so if you use your Gucci bag twice as long as your regular bag, it's worth the price.

I have two purses from Nordstrom's right now that are broken in some fashion and I don't know where to go to get them fixed. If they were Gucci's, I'd just drop them off at the store.

Now, having said that, I wouldn't buy one because I don't like them.

Edit: HAH! I just looked it up on the Gucci site, and they say that an estimate of the repair bill will be sent to you! So maybe all these women who are buying Gucci purses for their repair policy are buying into an urban legend! Although some women report never paying for repairs, another was charged $200 to replace the zipper.

I made my fiancee's carry-all bag. It's not really a purse, or a computer bag, or a messenger bag, but she uses it as all 3.
$85.00 sewing machine (which I already owned)
    $100.00 materials
So for about 1/10th the price of an 'entry level priced' boutique handbag she's got a 1-of-a-kind custom with a lifetime free repair guarantee.

As for wallets, I still carry the same cordura/velcro-closure wallet that I got as a freebie for some magazine subscription 17 or so years ago in high-school. (I think it was Outside magazine, but the logo has long since worn off the wallet.)
