Refrigerator Settings - Which is Colder?

So I think my refrigerator is dying.

But, before I abandon all hope, I'll try turning it up all the way.

But which way is colder? Is a lower number on the dial colder or a higher one?

I'd expect big number = more coldness, but who knows...

I may be wrong but I heard that if you make the refrigerator part higher, put the freezer part a little lower so your fridge doesn't work so hard and it the motor will be able to make the fridge part colder.

There only seems to be a single dial - it's in the fridge part, but I assumed it was a sort of master level.

It's actually the freezer part that's more of a concern - it's not freezing.

[Update: After turning the dial up to '7' - the highest number - the freezer seems to be refreezing. I hope it stays that way, but I rather doubt it will...]

Usually, it also says Colder with a arrow pointing in the correct direction.

(higher number will make refrigerator colder; lower number will make it warmer). Do not change the control more than one number at a time. Allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize before making further changes.

Have you cleaned the back and underneath of it for dust and stuff? Some of the older fridges have the thingys in the back that collect fuzzbunnies. Those are really easy to forget when it comes to cleaning. I understand that keeping it clean back there also helps.

sounds like it's time to start price checking.
