The Best Free Software

There was a thread like this not long ago but this apparently has more programs.

Free Programs

You're probably thinking of the one I started about the list of 50 Open Source software programs.

The list is smaller because it only listed "open source" software (which is free), not all freeware.

The article claims there are no fees or "trial periods" involved here either. Just free programs for you to use for as long as you want.

I wasn't saying anything bad about it...just saying they weren't all open source which is why the list is bigger.

Differnce:

Open Source is free but also gives you source code to modify the program either for your personal needs or to redistribute as another variation.

Freeware gives software free, but not (necessarily) the source code. You get nothing but the binary files. To 90% of people (non-programmers) this is all they want anyway.

Can't open source software not be free (I know this falls into an iffy category of software...).

I fit in that 90%. I have no idea how to write any type of code so it doesn't matter to me.

I also noticed they don't have MacTheRipper for ripping DVDs so you can....ummm...back up your originals or make copies for your kids to use or whatever. So obviously it's not 100% complete.

I'm not positive, but I *think* it has to be free by the rules of the open source license. The GPL insists it must be free, I believe.

I think GPL and Open Source are synonymous but not 100% sure.

Linux_Author can probably explain much better than I could.

Anyone tried the site they recommend, www.mint.com?

It links with your credit card and bank accounts to track your spending and offer ways to save more money. Sounds very interesting and useful, but enough to link my financial accounts into?
