So I was writing a paper on Bill Evans for a cross-cultural jazz class I'm taking, and decided to take a break and watch some Mushishi (an anime series, in case you guys haven't heard of it). I see a lot of parallels between the series and Bill Evans' music, but the most striking one I've noticed is that both are laid back yet highly intellectual. Like, I can put Bill Evans or Mushishi on to help me sleep because they're so relaxing, but when I pay 100% attention to them, I see layers and layers of meaning in each episode or piece. Just like Evans' music is highly dependent on the structure of the complex harmonies supporting the melody, Mushishi's storylines are like a leaf floating on deep waters with strong undercurrents.
Anyway, just wanted to share that random thought. Back to writing/procrastinating.
