Gates dethroned; Buffett is richest

(No..not Jimmy Buffet, silly)

After 13 years as the wealthiest person in the world, Microsoft's co-founder drops to third place, behind the Oracle of Omaha and Mexico's Carlos Slim Helú. Buffett and Gates are the only Americans in the top 10.

Apparently he was de-throned because of his announcement to attempt to aquire Yahoo. Not sure why this would affect his net worth.

Buffett and Gates are good friends and they want your kids to get hooked on bridge. Trust neither of them!

I bet they will armwrestle at some point to show who is truly the coolest.

Wait until RyanF sets his sights on amassing wealth. When he dropes the monie hamer, the souls of Buffet, Gates, The Singh Bros., The Hariries, Slim Hedu and all others shall be crushed by his massive economic guads.

Acquiring a company requires putting out a large amount of cash and stock. This shows up on the bottom line as lower-earnings and thus lower EPS; making the stock seemingly less valuable.

I'd agree if there was an actual aquisition taking place. So far it's all speculation and negotiation with little or no money being spent. Timmhaan is probably right. I don't follow MS stock, however it sounds like it dropped based on the initial news.

You missed the big to-do last year when Slim took the #1 away from Bill. At least Bill does a lot of charitable giving.

danno is right too. actually we all are. it's the speculation of the aquisition that made people sell off their microsoft shares...basically the market is anticipating lower earnings per share for microsoft if the deal goes down. and since the market is forward thinking, everyone wants to be ahead of the crowd, even if it hasn't actually happened yet.

My wife doesn't like him because Microsoft (like many other American corporations) hires foreign H1B status workers rather than "talented" Americans who are just as smart, if not smarter.

He gives away money by the BILLIONS. I guess that's why he's now #3.
