I am in Orlando

Hi all - just in case anyone is going to the Home and Garden show in Orlando, I am supporting a company called Tropical Latitudes (booth 1111) there for the next couple of days. So, if you want to see the Tree Dude in person - be there or be square!

(the owner is a ex-surfer so I am picking up lingo as it were...)

Today Saturday would be best since Sunday I will be there some, but have to leave early to catch my flight.

I was gonna welcome you back to civilization, but then I saw you were in Orlando...so er, uh, welcome back to the US.
Have fun and a safe flight back.

One of my students will be touching down in Orlando right about now. She'll be off to Miami tomorrow on a cruise so if you see a 76 year old Japanese woman with a big hat who answers to "Shima San", please say Konichiwa from Steve.

I swear there is an attempt to be more tropical here than back home.

You could have spotted me - I was the one trying to stay warm! It must have gotten down to 65 or something. I just don't know how you all stand it. I am fleeing back to warmer climes today.

Hahahahahaha! It's like me saying I am from Tasmania, then someone asking me if I know So-and-So who lives at the opposite end of the island, in a population of around half a million! Yeah... as if...

I'd like to say my tree-growing employers are sending me overseas for their annual appearance at the Chelsea Garden Show (in England), but alas, I didn't make the cut, nor the top 100, or even the also-rans list. So it's back to slaving in the orchards.

Hope you have a good time, despite the freezing weather!

Do you know Peter Cundall?
Did you know Stewy Denne?

I use to edit Peter Cundall's gardening column for the Sunday Tasmanian in Hobart when I was its editor back in the early 1980s and he was just getting a start on local ABC TV and radio. He used to write a LOT, and I had to pare it down to fit the pages. Man, was that a chore. But I have to admire the man... for his age and what he went through as a PoW, his knowledge sure justfies his title of National Treasure. Thing is... all the pictures were of him doing the stuff he was writing about. No theory there... just good ol' practical advice. I sometimes throw up the idea that Peter knew a lot about pruning fruit trees and the logic behind it; I don't think they have taken it seriously, but the wheel is turning!

No to Stewy Denne. But that funny little tap-dancing guy turned gardening guru.... ummm... Jamie Durie... is doing the design work for Flemings' exhibit at the Chelsea show. I believe there's friction over his performance... or lack of it.

I miss the Gardening Australia show so much. I remember a podcast interview of Peter Cundall on "Enough Rope" and the discussion of his War days. He is a funny guy.

As for Jamie, I remember him as a skinny little dude working out with his mate Billy "Thingy" in the same gym as me, back in around 1984. Who'd have thought he'd become as famous (????) as he has. One day a stripper, next thing a gardener in England.
