Sharing a printer with two computers???

trouble in the pgoat control tower....

We have our new iMac and 9-year old PC set up with internet access via the Apple Time Capsule. All systems go there.

We also have the one HP printer plugged into the single USB port on the Time Capsule, in order to share the single printer with both machines.

The iMac has printed just fine since we hooked it up.

The PC printed with this setup after a little tweaking on the first night.
However, the next day, it no longer worked. Several weeks later, we still cannot get the PC to print. We've tried messing with ports (we have it set on the TCP/IP), the sharing status on both computers, reinstalling the drivers on the PC, etc etc. No good.

We're stumped. If we simply never got it to work, that'd be one thing - but the fact that it worked fine for a few hours and then stopped with no further adjustments we know of (It worked when we went to bed the first night, but not the next morning....) is a unsolved mystery....

Any ideas on solving the riddle and getting both machines to print?

btw, I tried just plugging the printer straight into the PC's USB as we did before buying the Mac and it set up and worked fine in a matter of seconds....so it's simply does not seem to be talking to the printer via Time Capsule. We installed the Bonjour software on the PC, and it LOOKS ok, but something still is not right.....

HP printers can use http, ipp, jetdirect protocols and should work with port numbers 80 or 9100. If you have a IP address assigned to the printer, enter that during driver installation for the printer in windows.

I didn't think Time Capsule was a router, thought it was just a networked hard drive.

First, turn OFF printer-sharing and Windows Sharing and Personal Sharing on the Mac. As a general rule, I turn off EVERYTHING on the network and enable only the bare minimum of protocols and services necessary to get a job done. You'll get faster throughput and higher security.

Second, on the PC, turn OFF the built-in software firewall. Or enable a new pass-through UDP-port #5353 for Bonjour communications. Then download the latest Bonjour v1.0.4 (note the separate link for 64-bit Windows). Double-click to install after the download.

Start up IE on the PC and click on the Bonjour icon. It will browse your network and find all Bonjour-enabled devices. You should see the printer listed, which means the TimeCapsule is sharing the printer correctly.

Next, plug the printer into a USB and install its driver and verifies that it prints OK. Then unplug printer and put back on the TimeCapsule. On the PC run the Bonjour Printer Wizard on your desktop to add the printer. Be sure you have the driver-CD for your printer ready as Windows will ask for it. Follow this guide here. Then delete the USB printer and keep the Bonjour printer.

thanks for all this.

We pretty much had done all this already; I did it again just to be sure - same thing.

The PC is seeing the printer, seeing it on the Time Capsule, it shows as 'ready'. But when you print, it just takes a few minutes and then a "failed to print" message pops up. The troubleshooting thing is of no help.

One thing - I shut off printer sharing on both machines, but the Windows firewall was already off and that Bonjour UDP 5353 allowed. I believe the firewall is off due to our subscription to Symantec/Norton Security. could that be causing the problem?

I don't even know if it is worth keeping/paying for Norton over the proprietary MS firewall at this point....

I did a little research on the Time Capsule...and the only thing I really found that may help is that it is not a print server and will not allow both machines to print at the same time according to this review.

Hmmm....interesting, although I am not clear on whether they mean you simply cannot send two printing tasks through the TC simultaneously:

In addition to adding storage, Apple also touts the USB ports for adding printers to your network. We were able to add a Canon Pixma ip2600 inkjet printer with no trouble, even over a powered USB hub that also had a hard drive connected to it. All of the various Mac- and Windows-based systems on the Time Capsule's network were able to print to it. We also installed a Wi-Fi-enabled Lexmark X7550 to the Time Capsule's network wirelessly. The Time Capsule is not a print server, so if you send a job to the printer while it's printing from another system, you'll simply get an error message, instead of the Time Capsule adding the new job to a queue. That's to be expected, although it's still a bit frustrating, as Apple makes a point to advertise the Time Capsule's suitability for network printing.

From the part where they mention the hardwired Canon inkjet, I gather that is the same setup we have and it is working okay (two computers, one Mac, on Windows, both on TC, one printer hardwired in - and we don't even have a hub there, just the printer plugged into the one USB port.). No wireless, as they mention in the Lexmark's case. And we never try to print two things at once.

Sorry, I've never tried "sharing" a printer that way. I've always used cigar box-sized print servers (i.e., two to three parallel/USB ports on the back along with an ethernet port.) or a network-enabled printer.
