How well do campus jobs pay?

Next year, wherever I end up, I will almost certainly be living on campus for college. This means I'll have to leave my job.
How well do campus jobs pay? I am going to try to get a job at whatever machine shop is on campus. Would $12/hour be unreasonable to ask for?

Er...if you're gonna work at clerical jobs, food service, library helper etc. don't expect to earn $12. If you work as an RA or the like, maybe.

edit: oh, you said machine shop. Um...dunno how much those pay, but they don't pay us student peons very much

When I worked on campus I got $8.05 an hour and that was in a level three tech support position. Most people were making minimum wage.

LOTS of people want to work in the machine shops and art departments and what not. This means that the jobs will pay less. Doesn't matter a bit if you have previous experience.

Edit: I see you are in NH, where are you planning on going to school? And may I recommend UMaine? So much classier than Durham.

I work in a small library and earn $12 when my boss isn't there (nights and weekends) and I'm the shift leader, $10.50 otherwise.

Your comment about UMaine is funny. My classmates in Durham always talk about how much less classy those Mainers are

My goal, which I think may be attainable this time, is to be in Mass. Amherst, Mass.

Not much. Technically it wasn't on campus, but my tutoring job that I worked through the college payed $9.50 and that was one of the higher paying work-study jobs.

Damn . Sounds like 12 is probably unobtainable under almost every circumstance. I am going to need to find some legal way to make money.

Become a research assistant (i.e. peon) for a well-funded lab! Seriously, they pay more than any other job on campus. They'll work you to near death...but! It's a great thing to put on resumes.

I had a research job that let me double bill em. $10/hr twice, effectively 20/hr, didn't do much of anything, gained a lot of experience, $$$, govt funding rocks.

Machine shop would be a good place to try to get a job if you're studying engineering, but $12/hour is unlikely.

Most likely, if they have a position to offer, they have a pay rate they are authorized to offer, perhaps with a little bit of flexibility based on experience, but not much. There's usually enough students looking for the convenience of on-campus jobs that they can easily fill them all with minimum wage or barely more.

If they do ask what you'd request as a salary, I'd be hesitant to ask for more than $10.

Depends on how evil the grad/post grads in the lab are.

I get $9/hr to grade papers for a freshman geology lab class.

I just got a job through the college as a GIS intern at the local BLM (Bureau of Land Management) office. It only starts at $9/hr, but it's great GIS experience and it's a 3 mile bike commute (with other avid BLM bike commuters).

All American collegiate football players get paid much more than $12/hour.
