How many of you actually WANT strangers to talk to you?

I go about my day, everyday, talking to very few people. Most of the time I'll just go to work, talk to my workers (I'm the manager ), then go home. Very rarely will I talk to strangers. It's not that I don't like chatting, because I'll happily chit-chat with anyone...it's just that I don't really care to. Anyways, I'm wondering:
How many of you would rather have a stranger come up to you and talk about something random than not?

I enjoy variety, so yeah, I enjoy meeting new people. To do this requires talking to strangers. If you rebuff them or refuse to engage in dialog with them, how do you expand your group of friends?

I'm not really sure if I (or you) know what I'm talking about here. I dunno. Fuggit. I think I'm just really anti-social.

I'll chat with just about anyone if they make the first move. My friends think I'm nuts for talking to drunk, homeless guys.

I love chatting with strangers. Doesn't bother me one bit. I'm a much more social creature than I care to admit.

I'll talk to anyone...even the squirrel that watches me sitting on my deck.
I have no issues with conversing with strangers....after a while, they are no longer strangers.
They may still be strange, but so am I...so really does not stop me.

Talk to people I don't know all the time. On the road (bike), on the bus, traveling to other cities.

Plus for the last several years I've been the Publicity Director for my bike club so not only am I contacting sports organizations to set up events for the club, I'm also running a booth at different festivals, sporting events, outdoor expos and other events. And I talk bikes, bike safety, bike clothing, etc, etc.

I'd say I got worn into that stuff pretty good.

And meeting other forumites = priceless. Nothing like going up to stay with someone where you've never seen a picture of her and I'm now standing in a bus terminal in Toronto where I've never been before. Oh, I do know her name and her handle on a bicycle forum.

hehe

Some strangers have a friendly, open demeanor. It is easy and fun to talk with them. Some you could not pry open with a crowbar. Trying to talk with them usually requires too much effort and goes nowhere.

Once I got onto a Southwest plane (open seating). I was by the window and alone in a whole row. An attractive woman 20 years younger than I stopped and sat down in the aisle seat. That was a shock. Attractive women usually just walk on by. I made eye contact, smiled faintly, and said, "Hello." Then I went back to my magazine. She began to talk to me. I know full well I am married and was cordial with her, but was very careful not to do anything flirtatious. We talked about all sorts of things during our shared time. The two hour flight went by in an instant. Both of us felt very much richer for the experience.

Charlie Gibson of ABC News told the story of being on a plane and just feeling exhausted. He wanted contact with no one. He noticed a figure sat down next to him, but he kept his gaze turned away. At the end of the flight he caught a glimpse of the figure from behind as she was leaving. He is 99 percent sure he had been sitting next to Mother Theresa the whole time. He would have given his eye teeth to have met her and talked with her, but it became a missed opportunity because he did not want to talk to a stranger.

Generally speaking, no. Given where I live, it will almost certainly someone trying to sell me something for too much. My Spanish is quite good now, but not so that people just want to chat usually. Besides, I am not terribly social. I like to discuss ideas, not so much into small talk. Since we are a major business in our area - those who might be interesting are shy around me, and those who just want to try to get connected are irritating.

But, in truth, this has been most of my life. I can't help but be analytical so this social thing I can play, but it doesn't fit. I can be a very nice person, I am told, but I will almost never be considered the life of the party.

Very true. Mr. East Hill thinks it's odd how I can launch into discussions with virtually anyone. I have invariably come away better for the experience, though.

I always talk to strangers, and I always want strangers to talk to me. Of course I am talking about people that are not drunk, mentally handicapped, or drugged up. those three have a different place all together.

if I don't talk to strangers, I would not be going out with one of them tonight.
