Does She Mean It?

So, my lady's birthday is tomorrow, and I was planning on buying her a present, a nice jacket from Banana Republic that she's looked at twice while we were shopping. However, when I asked her what she might like for her birthday, she insisted that I not buy her any stuff, but take her out for a nice dinner in DC (we're flying there on Thursday for her to meet my family). It seems pretty sincere, and it's not one of those, "Don't get me anything" kind of things. SO, do you think she means it? SHould I really not get her anything and just take her out to an awesome dinner (there's a Spanish Tapas place downtown called Jaleo that I know she'd love)? I need some advice from the ladies of Foo on this one. And, just for fun... Otto:

edit: No, Otto is not the girlfriend in question.

I'm afraid I've got no answer for you. I tend to believe my girlfriend when she says things like that and then I get in trouble later.

I just wanted to say that Otto does not look pleased.

you still need to get her some token flowers and/or a card even if no gift. Trust me on this.

I would love to, but I really can't afford that. The jacket is like $170.

Get her something that only cost half the cost of the jacket at Banana Republic and take her to a so so place for dinner.

Just think how good the make up sex will be in three weeks.

Yeah, I do know her kind of music, and I know that there's a new CD out that she wants, but cannot for the life of me remember what it is. I think it's Wilco or something, but I could be totally off-base. I really want to get her the jacket, but we're going out for lunch and dinner, and I don't think I have teh funds for all three.

Doesn't anybody do a mix-tape anymore?! sheesh!
ok cheap fun ...
fill her car (or bed) with balloons, not helium, the kind you buy in the dollar store in bags of 50 and blow up.
Make her dinner, on her bday. invite friends over and have dessert first.

oh and make sure you take a small gift for her mom, like they do on tv. Don't tell the gf you're doing it.

btw, was just in DC this weekend, went to Bar Pillar. cool old bar, great cheap tapas.

Okay... just took a long break from work and bought her a pair of shoes that she was ogling over the nother night. They were much cheaper than the jacket, which BR didn't have anyway. They were $60, and now I'll still have money for lunch and dinner in DC. Shoes are a tough buy for a birthday, but I feel pretty confident that she'll like these.

Excellent! She may be quite serious about the lunch and dinner, but she would not mind a small gift, and the shoes show that you've been paying attention.

Try asking your GF about a small gift for her mum--that's an excellent suggestion. It doesn't need to be extravagant, just thoughtful.

Well, we're having a small party for her over at her mom's house tomorrow night. I'm planning on taking over a bottle of wine from my buddy's latest batch. I think she'll like that.

Actually, I NAILED it on Valentine's Day. We had gone to a huge antique store here by my house, and she saw this Fiesta Ware vase that she loved. I almost bought it on the spot, but instead, came back a few days later and bought it, then took it to the florist and had them fill it with roses. She actually cried when she saw it. She LOVED it! So, if I slip up a little here when she told me not to get her anything, I think I'll still be okay.

Even better than getting her the jacket for her birthday would be getting her the jacket randomly, for no reason other than "just because."

Now you need to pay more attention to Otto. You owe him big time for the humiliation you've put him through.
