I read the newspaper online at work. I can't do it anymore.
Today, indicative of the general stories, was filled with four terrible stories. First, man puts his two month old daughter in the microwave for twenty seconds - what the... Second, embezzler kills whole family - complete with a photo of a really nice bunch of kids and his wife in front of the Christmas tree. Third, truck driver runs red light and crashes into the back of a car filled with five children... father coincidentally turns up at the scene .... Finally, 16yo stabs father at 7am, mother catches him, she also gets stabbed... neighbours report that they were a normal family devoted to their son...
Was the world always like this and internet media has just made it more accessible? It is so depressing. I am not paranoid, but I think I am becoming over-protective of my family as a result.
I stopped watching the news a long time ago. I still hear about it through coworkers, friends, etc., and I'm sometimes out of the loop when it comes to things everybody else knows about, but at least I'm not depressed every night before I go to bed.
Stopped watching TV period. I hear all the stuff from YOU guys.

I watch the local news. National news is full of doom and gloom.
Local is as well to a certain degree but around here it tends to be a little more balanced. However, from time to time the city seems to go nuts and we turn the news off. Especially around christmas.
Most of what passes for news nowadays is really just gossip. On local stations here in Philly, I'd estimate that 70-80% of the items are really nobody's business. It's basically porn, when you come right down to it.
