But.. can he play thru Giant Steps ?

    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=176_1206189395

Please, someone teach this kid what 'music' is all about - before he turns into a guitar player!

So much potential for 'real' talent .. shame for it to go to waste like that?

    I'm guessing his dad's a late 30s, early 40s metal head.

Well with skills like that he'll learn new stuff during his teenage rebellion years which are just around the corner. No one can stand their parents' music past the age of 14.

Unless of course 9.9 out of every other ten guitar players happens to play the guitar exactly 'like that'.. Seriously, even somebody like hendrix could only come up with 'so many' fresh and innovative licks within the standard pentatonic positions ..

It is 'wrong' - because much of it is not really music !! .. It is more or less just mindlessly running thru patterns - w/o hardly even thinking! .. He sould really be able to do much more with those kinds of chops. What a waste .. typical. I blame his parents for being aware of their child's talent and potential - yet not bothering expose him to new horizons. -?

Ah, you didnt tell me that you get to define what music is and isn't.

Seriously, how do you know anything about this kids parents and what they've exposed him to? Sounds like you're the one who could look into "other horizons."

Okay, time for a novel concept! .. 'Creating' music involves 'creativity' ..

    say it with me; cre·a·tiv·i·ty .. !

An adolescent playing music does not mean that his parents exposed him to that type of music, hell its more likely the opposite happened. Creativity? Who's to say metal isn't creative? It requires the musician to come up with their own material which has musical merit. I'm sorry, but just because you don't like a certain type of music does not mean it's not music. And saying that this kid is wasting his talent is just as bad.

What's wrong with him knowing a little bit about 'harmony' - and well, ''music'' in general? .. Why do you seem to find the idea of 'music' so distasteful ? .. Half of 'music' is ''harmony'' .. ''Harmony'' is made of progressions of chords, chords are made from bunches of notes with corresponding sets of scales, scales are made from sets of notes, notes are made from sin-waves of sound of a specific frequency (or pitch) ..

And so it really is a good idea to know a thing or two about this half of ''music'' (i.e. progressions of chords), and how to play them and play thru them. Really, it's kind of an essential thing if you wish to know how to play 'real music' .. Kind of like how knowing a few words and some basic rules of grammar will open new horizons when it comes to writing or speaking and conveying 'real' thoughts and 'original' ideas! .. Memorizing and repeating a few words and sayings is what autistic ppl do, and unfortunately it is also what most guitar players do (like eddie van halen and eric clapton - and this kid in the video) .. And it doesn't have to be like this. No, it doesn't.

You get your own opinion... you don't get your own reality.

I think both of those young players are very good, and are playing at a level way beyond other kids their age. I disagree that guitarists like that are a dime a dozen, because most of today's young players can't play squat.

Both of those guys show the one difference between them and other kids their age: the ability to focus long enough and often enough to get in serious practice time. Most youngsters aren't built that way.

Here's a guy that I've enjoyed watching over the years. At 12 yrs old he showed some serious talent, and now in his twenties sounds freakin' awesome.

    At 12:

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Wait, I thought the whole problem with the 80's Hair Metal movement was that there were way too many kids who did nothing but spend "serious practice time" shedding in their bedrooms

...rather than actually getting out and playing with other musicians.
