I've had it - I'm buying a Mac

I wanted a Mac for a few years and always thought my next computer would be one. However looking at pros/cons, last Dec I went and bought a Vista-based laptop (nice laptop as it goes: Dell XPS M1330, crimson red, 2.2, 2GB, 160GB, LCD).

After frustrating and annoying times with Vista, today I really have had it (again). And tomorrow I'll buy a Mac (again). Hopefully I would have come to my senses by tomorrow and go off the idea once again (all I have to do is step inside the APple store and it makes me cringe). I've just spent Ł1k on a Dell, I shouldn't really spend any more on another computer. The Mac will do many things to p*ss me off as well.

The network applet in Vista really sucks just like it did in every other version of Windows (ok, it sucks less, but it still sucks). I was downloading some stuff using wireless, and decided to plug in the network cable and figured I better go into the network app to "do something to make it work" - but the netApp in Windows is so pathetic.

Now I'm done with the rant.

EDIT: @ CarbonLite: I really dont want this to be another Mac v Windows thread. Quite frankly I dont have spare money buring a hole in my account, I just have this Mac itch I need to scratch.

EDIT 2: I've had laptop since December. Now it's April. I've had 16 crashes in that time. That averages out to once /week. I suppose I should update the Dell drivers, but ticking all those boxes within Dell Support for driver downloads is PITA (or I should htfu).

Regardless of OS, get whatever has the least annoyances and works for you in the long run. I'm content with Windows Server 2008 on a laptop, but I'd be just as content with a Macbook running OS XS and Parallels running in coherence mode.

No, my computer is already wirelessly connected to the internet, but it seemed a little slow. So I wanted to plug in the network cable (faster) but my computer didn't pick that up. So I went to the network applet and I could have figured it out, but it's been a long weekend and I just wanted the damn thing to work without me doing anything apart from plugging in a physical cable.

I dont know if that would have worked on a Mac or not - I might even have had the same problem. The thing is, on my much older laptop, when moving from wireless to wired mode, the network app picks this change up. But my new one doesn't (or maybe I didn't give it enough time and lost patience).

Sssh just between you and me, I'm just trying to build up an arsenal of Vista Annoyances that I can tell my wife about to justify the purchase of a new toy. That, and the network sucks.

How much you wana bet that it did. You do realize that the bandwidth from your wireless router-->wireless card is a hell of a lot bigger than from your modem to your ISP...right?

Also, though i don't know why you would want to as i find the Vista application very useful and easy, that you can download free applications that work a little differently. In fact, your dell likely came with Dells program. It wouldn't surprise me, actually, if that's the program you're so frustrated with, or you're trying to use windows and it's not turned on because of dells program.

#40 Apple Products
It is surprising that it took all the way to #40 to call out Apple products. Initially, we were planning for an entire week on Apple products, but that would just be over kill.

Plain and simple, white people don’t just like Apple, they love and need Apple to operate.

On the surface, you would ask yourself, how is that white people love a multi-billion dollar company with manufacturing plants in China, mass production, and that contributes to global pollution through the manufacture of consumer electronic devices?

Simple answer: Apple products tell the world you are creative and unique. They are an exclusive product line only used by every white college student, designer, writer, English teacher, and hipster on the planet.

You see, a long time ago Apple’s were super popular among layout artists and graphic designers. Then Apple released Final Cut Pro and became the standard for film editors. As a result, lots of creative industries used Apple computers instead of PCs. Eventually, people started making the connection, and all of a sudden all white people need to have a Mac.

When you ask white people about Mac’s they will say “oh, it’s so much better than Windows,” “it’s just easier to use,” “they are so cutting edge,” and so forth. What’s amazing is that white people NEED to meet people who use Windows to justify themselves spending an extra $500 for a pretty looking machine.

It is also important that white people are reminded of their creativity, and remember you need a Mac to creatively check email, creatively check websites, and creatively watch DVDs on planes.

White people also need iPods, iPhones, Apple TV, AirPort Express stations, and anything else that Apple will produce. Because you need to express your uniqueness by purchasing everything that a publicly traded company produces.

Apple products also come with stickers. Some people put them on their computer, some people put them on windows, but to take it to the pinnacle of whiteness, you need to put the Apple sticker in the rear window of your Prius, Jetta, BMW, Subaru 4WD Station Wagon or Audi. You then need to drive to a local coffee shop (Starbucks will do in a pinch) and set up your apple for the world to see. Thankfully, the Apple logo on the back will light up! So even in a dark place, people can see how unique and creative you (and the five other people doing the exact same thing) truly are!

Knowledge of Apple products can be useful in a number of social situations. If you see a white person with a Mac, an easy way to approach them is to say “Is that a Powerbook? What OS do you have?” They will happily start talking to you, after the requisite five minutes, you can invite them to an 80s night.

OK, this is totally OT but I'm offended that Mr. "Stuff White People Like" lumps Apple weenies with Subie fans. Prius, sure, BMW, sure, but not Subaru! Sorry, just had to speak up for all the Subaru (non-Apple) fans here.

Yes, that's the whole point of RTF's i think....a universal text file format that has the ability to "richly' format documents.

Yeah, .rtf is a crossplatform format. It opens with the same formating in MS and Apple and Linux and Unix, Presuming the nix OS'es have a wordprocesser compatible with .rtf.

Subaru FTW! Subaru > *

And, OP, I think it's just absurd for you to buy a new machine just because Vista sucks. (or because you can't figure it out)

Just install XP and be done with it.

*EDIT*: I see in another thread you just installed Linux. Good choice. Stick with that and don't waste your money on an Apple product.

But yeah, if you are throwing that Dell in the trash in frustration, I'll pay for the shipping to get it to me instead...
