Lord tunderin' jesus!

Tonight was an epic night at the skatepark!

I remember a cop, and lots of weed.

And nothing bad happening.

I'll update when I'm sober and am fed details by my friends and co-workers...

Why does my mind want to change the title of this thread to :

Dude, Where's My Bike (and bong collection)?

starring WTP and Ashton Kutcher.

For some odd reason this makes me less inclined to help the local group wanting to put in a skatepark, not more...

I say work on it, but maybe make each person sign some sort of "drug / alcohol free at the skatepark" pledge. Hate the sin, love the sinner.

Good idea, but too bad they're all under 18 and can't be held legally responsible for a contract.

For the last couple years I've been going to court with my eldest son for petty charges that just won't go away because he's too lazy to complete any of the court's requirements. One was a shoplifting charge immediately after he left the skatepark. The court issued him notice that he was not allowed at the skatepark for a year...and do you think that kept him away? He's pretty much what you wouldn't want hanging around your kids: has drug issues, anger issues, theft issues, authority issues, etc...

Do I blame the skatepark? No, but I do see kids like him spending time there when they could be completing their community service, working a job to pay court fines or staying clean as an utter waste of time. I suppose there's drug use at any sort of public playground, but why does it seem to happen more often at a skatepark, as if it's part of the required culture?

Sorry to hear that. I pray I never have to face issues like that.

That won't work. My son rides a BMX.

Just to be clear, I am not trying to transfer my issues with my son to WTP's epic experiences or to all skateparks.

No doubt the marijuana in his case is medically required and the cops were just there to hand out balloons.

It's a bum rap for the many kids who don't touch drugs or alcohol. My son (16), and all of his many skateboarding pals are clean and sober (and most attend church too). It's easy to stereotype, but in this instance, by jumping to the conclusion that all skateboarders are dopers, you'd have a pretty good chance of being wrong.

<edit> - I hope your son pulls his act together. Skateboarders do get pretty tight with their circle of friends, and if they get into one with problems, it can be tough to shake.

That is a lot of the problem. Even around here, the kids at the skate park are going around asking each other if they have weed and acid. I don't really go, because I'm mostly a longboard cruiser and hill bomber. I don't skate the pools and parks.

A lot of it is an age thing. As for your son, it might not matter if there were a skatepark or not. You have to nip that in the bud, man. You're the first line, so you should prevent him from going there.

He's an adult now, will be 19 in August. Not much I can do at this point.

I've been glad as a father for the trouble he's been in with the law. He's been in counseling, gets tested regularly due to probation, etc...but it all comes down to his decision. It makes it tough for him to make good decisions when drug use, theft and disrespect for authority and the safety of others is glorified by his heroes and buddies.

We had a indoor skatepark that we would go to almost every other day back when I lived in Colorado, it was the cleanest place to be. It was our local RC Car track / Hobby Store that got closed for selling cocaine.

You know this is one of the better responses - you can't blame the indoor skateparks. The stuff can be all over. Personally I think it's great to provide areas for the youth to do things - I come from an old town in the sticks where there literally was one gas station, one grocery store, two corner stores, etc. - and a park, a couple of quarry's that were HAHA illegal to be in, etc - so we either hung at the park with our coolers of beer (yeah I was 17) or in the quarry's with bonfires and music and more beer and and there was nothing available for kids to do. Once in a while a school dance - and of course the Friday night basketball or football game. Other than that - nothing.

(oops did forget one thing - the school nurse - a kindly older woman - had a nice piece of land by her house where I was around the corner from - she and her husband built a baseball diamond - and so we all gathered into local baseball teams - those were fun years! - and she would join us outside - and then she got ill and the baseball thing quietly went away <sigh> - she was an awesome person - the world could do with a few more of her...)

I like it now when I travel out there that I see - go kart courses, skating rinks, the college that I work for has a big skating center with several rinks where it is a big meeting place for grade school/high school hockey teams, etc. Basketball areas, many new areas for baseball - and the list goes on. I think it's great.

We got there last night after deciding the downtown park was way to cold (next to a lake, and it was windy), and much to our surprise there was a few cars and trucks parked on the edge of the park with headlights, floodlights and music pumping. At first we thought it was some sort of competition but after looking closer it was all BMX riders and Skaters. We joined in and rode a few hours with them, about midway through the session Some others and I decided it was time for a break. It was a bit after 10 when a cop car came up behind us as we were all smoking some kush out of a hookah and a joint that was being passed. He watched the skaters and BMX riders get along in the park, and enjoying themselves, he then saw us smoking sitting on our bikes/boards pointing at the various riders and just conversing. He walked up to us, and looked right at me. His first words to the group were "Son, are you high"

The only reply I could squeeze out was a few good chuckles and a grin.

He sat for and chilled for a bit and COMMENTED us on how we were at least being RESPONSIBLE with our drugs, and that we were all having a good time without causing a ruckus, and that it was a good thing we were being active with our sports. Then he left, and we heard nothing more from the police or anybody.

Come to America. You'd get a nice free trip, some free clothes, and the chance to be an environmentalist picking up trash... if you're lucky. Else, you get room with free meals.

I'm a little disappointed, WTP. This was a boring story.

And to think I waited all this time for you to get back. Sheesh.

hehe, you got that right. Community Service.

Course I go to McDonald's with Mom today, about mid afternoon - now she's 74 and a spry little woman - and quite alert - and she wanted a McFish or whatever sammie so fine - so we went - it's only a 1 block ride from my house ...

And at the stoplight - she looks over at the enclosed bus stop and watches a few long seconds and says - "My goodness, look at the way that woman is smoking her cigarette?! Think there's something wrong with her tongue because she keeps spitting and then blows on the cigarette to relight it?!"

ahh, yeah Mom - <snicker>

However, my point here is that why blast it out in public? At least take a walk behind the trees - I mean that's what we used to do ...
