Blown Away

I can't believe the call I just received...

The director of activities for the nearby timeshare office just called and asked whether we had bikes for rent yet. This is the same office that has a "gravity tour" they advertise...taking hapless tourists up a fire road that is mostly downhill, usually on our rental bikes unless they happen to have brought their own...in which case they probably ride enough to see how lame the tour is. Last year the bikes came back so thrashed the shop owner had us make sure to warn the customers renting the bikes that they were fully responsible for them, including damage the clown piling them on top of the shuttle van caused, so keep an eye on them. At one point we discussed not renting them out for the tour at all as regular rentals put nowhere near the damage into them as this tour. We never did charge the customers for the damage as we felt a bit sorry for them.

Back to the phonecall, I explain to the very pushy lady that all we have for rent so far are comfort/cruisers made for the pavement, which is just as well because all our backroads and trails are still too soggy to ride without causing damage (it was snowing while I was on the phone).

Her response was, "Oh, so they can only ride on the roads and be killed by cars?"

I am still dumbfounded that someone can be that ignorant.

Very nice beotchy nasty response from her - sheesh!!!

If I were to rent from a place a bike - for a certain condition (plan on taking it out to the desert mtns, etc) - and I will this next September when I'm in Portland, that I would be expected to be able ... if possible ... to rent something that is appropriate and for the going rate. If the shop did not or would prefer not to rent bicycles first of all or, second of all, due to the conditions, then then next phrase out of that snotty little head of hers - would have been ..

"Well thank you, but do you know of anyone who would rent? No? Well thank you, again"

good grief.

Obviously a bicycle enthusiast btw - didn't bring her own bicycle. Dam hard to rent/own that bicycle luggage, ay?

What the ..... Who let him in here? *Shuts the door and locks him out*

Just charge them 4 times the normal amount and see if they still want it or a deposit that is equal to the cost of the bike.

No sweat man, I'd rather be on the trails myself, but at this time of year all that's available is the roads. The ironic part of her statement was the only paved trail network in our town is around the timeshare area and downtown by the river. The timeshares are so close to the main bulk of shopping that it is ludicrous to not encourage travel on the roads and paths, especially for vacationers with the time and inclination to do so. I'd even consider installing baskets and racks on the bikes as well as offering a special weeklong rate for people lessening the impact of their SUVs in the core area.

I had a convo with the shop owner and we're brainstorming on how to resolve the situation for mutual benefit. Thanks for the suggestions so far, feel welcome to add more.
