    I really wish this tech were commercialized

    Rather dated article, but still, I wish this tech would be made commercial, so a lot of metal parts wouldn't have to be painted for looks:

    Just the possibilities would be almost endless, although it may bring us back to the mid 90s anodized aluminum everything fad.

    Take any type of metal, run it under the laser apparatus to cut in the atomic sized grooves, slap a code of shellac or clear-coat over it, and voila, almost any color you want with zero paint.

    Wow, looks great. I reckon it will be on regular metal parts in a few years...

    It mentioned irridescant multi colours like a butterfly wing. Cool. I want that on my bike!!

    That's hardly dated. Give it a few more years.

    However, I think it will scratch relatively easily, so clear coat will probably be a must.

    I think they used that on my Trek. Sadly, thought chose to make aluminum colored aluminun.
