New Mercedes equals Grief

I just bought a new 2007 leftover mercedes benz c280 4matic and seem to be getting high brow comments. Things like " O my, did porsche not have your color", "Must be nice", "Aren't we special".

I do not buy things to keep up with the jone's, status symbol, look at me, etc. I am also not rich with a snobby attitude.
Most of these people have or just bought vehicles which cost more than mine. I got a fantastic deal which I could not pass up.
Things don't usually bother me but I feel I should have gotten a toyota corolla S.

My buddy came over with his 2008 new hyundai sante fe, loaded, saw mine, and right away the comments came. His hyundai stickered at $32,455. mine, about the same.

Who Cares!

Who cares? It's mostly jealousy talking. Mercedes sells an image (as well as a quality vehicle) and that's the people who are commenting on arre buying into.

You can do one of two things. You can play it up if someone chooses to take that attitude and, if you're feeling really mean, use the image and affirm their "lesser" status. I say affirm because if they're making comments, it's because the marketing has worked and whether they know it or not, that's what they're responding to.

Or you can just ignore it. Just give them an evil eye if they make stupid comments or look at them like they've lost their minds.

If it's a friend, call them on it. Straight out. The guy with the Sante Fe... tell him he paid as much for his new car as you did... and ask him what he thinks now or something like that.

Mercedes started selling an E class diesel here last year. http://www.mbusa.com/models/main.do?modelCode=E320BTEC It's not cheap, but it's a diesel Mercedes. I think it gets around 37ish MPG.

[edit: Hmmm... the MB website says mid 20s for highway. WTF? With diesel fuel cost as much as it is, I'm not seeing much benefit at the moment for the extra you'll pay for a diesel engine option. Weird.]

What I find funny is at some workplaces I've been at (thankfully not my current one) if you come to a place with a Honda, people say you are ruining the look of the parking lot and cheapening the company's image by driving such a car. Of course, if you come there in a high end Lexus, they make jokes about one being car poor, and recommending the workplace just hand the employee paycheck over to Toyota Finance.

Drive what you like.

Ehhh don't sweat it. They are just jealous because they weren't frugal or smart enough to know how to get a good deal.

Just enjoy your new car, you worked hard for it. It's nobody's place to judge what you do with your money.

You should have given your buddy **** about paying $32K for a Hyundai. For that money, he could be driving a Mercedes.

My Jetta TDI is still worth the cost of diesel. But my motorcycle gets that same mileage on petrol. I've been riding it alot. I am really pissed at the way its climbed up and out paced regular gas. There is some serious gouging going on with that.

That's the car I have. Mine's a 2006. The 4matic is great in snow. I have a Jeep and the C280 gets through the snow almost as good as the Jeep.

By the way, other drivers hate Mercedes and BMWs. I drove a Corvette (which most everyone loves) the same time as my wife had her car. In heavy traffic, people were intentionally rude when I drove her car - like speeding up when I had my signal on to cahnge into their lane. When I was in my Corvette and did similar things, other cars tooted, smiled, and waved me in

I dislike BMWs because no matter where I am in the world, the drivers seem to give me grief, especially passing closely and blowing horns.

Anyway... the MB purchase was wise in many respects. Unless MB has downgraded their engineering quality in recent times, it's likely that your vehicle will be still operating like an old-fashioned Swiss watch in 15 years' time... while the Hyundai has been long squashed, melted down in China and returned as a Walmart bike (not that there is anything wrong with Walmart bikes!).

Must be an American thing with the corvette. Who does'nt like any year or flavor vette.

Believe it or not the best thing I like about the car (c280 4m) are the rain sensing wipers.....So Cool!
Never experienced its all wheel drive capabilities yet. Weather here in east coast Pa. is beautiful spring like.

Drive what you like.
Oh, that one's easy. You just look them in the eye and say, "this company doesn't pay me well enough to afford a more expensive car. If they're concerned with what their parking lot says, they need to pay me more and I'll get a "better" car!"

That ought to end any more of that kind of talk... especially from company management!

I've got the older version of your car. As my friend who drives the E420 recently asked me:
Him: "you know what the "C", in C280 stands for?"
Me: "What?"
Him: "Cheap!"

A Hyundai costing 32g's??? Tomorrow it is worth $16,000. I really do not understand why anyone would pay that for a Hyundai when you can have a decked out F-150 Lariat 4 door Super Crew for that. I mean...WTF?
