TQ: changing the world one non-cyclist at a time

I spent all of last night teaching my buddy how to give his cheap Kona hybrid a tune up. I ordered him a set of brake/shift cables/housing and explained to him why all the stuff on his bike was running like crap.

Had him clean the cassette and chain rings and deraillure, scrubbed off old brake crud on his rims then helped him install all the new cables while explaining how the various components worked. He seemed to enjoy getting his hands dirty (not something he does very often) and was eager to do all the work himself...a good thing.

So today, with his spanking "new" bike, i took him for a ride. I had planned on 12 miles if he could do it but let him set the pace and path...we ended up doing 16 @ 15mph. Not shabby for someone on their first ride, essentially, and on a 25 pound hybrid that is too big for him.

Yatta yatta yatta we discussed the bores of running and in the end he said "We should do this more often". He did laugh at my lycra, but i warned him that he may look as much of a dweeb as me, and on mile 7 said his butt was getting numb and he could see the use of padded shorts.

Good stuff...

Next Mission: The girlfriend wants to get a bike. There is a bike auction this Saturday. We shall conquer...

"yup...running sucks. Hurts too"
"Yeah, my legs get all sore, my feet get all sore"

"And you get to see so much more on a bike huh?"
