Why do so many .....

..... new members (and some old members) hit the Return/Enter key when
their words get to the end of the line in the text box. Do they do this when
typing a letter in Word or Pages or OpenOffice? Have they never heard of test
wrapping? Just keep typing people. Computers are smarter than most users.
Hit the Return/Enter key only when you want to start a new line or thought.

For those who are prematurely wearing out the Return/Enter key, the text below shows what the above looks like when I keep typing and let the text wrap.

OK, here's my explanation. In the good old days, when we did 'typing' instead of keying, there was no such thing as wraparound. A good typist always made sure that the margins were as even as possible on both sides, so he/she would hit 'enter' (or the typewriter equivalent, 'return') so as to not have to throw in a hyphen, or to have the right edge look really ragged.

That's for those of us who actually used typewriters. I have no idea why someone who was raised with a PC would do that.

Thanks M. You got that right.
Yesterday my wife wouldn't let me do anything. She waited on me like a servant. I hate that. I kept telling her I was fine and could get around just fine. She kept telling me to sit down and prop my leg up on a pillow.

Is this related to the rule that we don't use two spaces after a period when word processing (as opposed to typing on a typewriter)?

Hey, don't make fun. When I was a kid, living along a parade route, the only paper we could afford for the typewriter was strips of scrounged confetti.
