I want a bike that I can make my own.

My friend has a BMX bike and it is all customized, with no brakes, and very light parts.

I want a bike that I can customize, build up, like buy better parts and put them on.

IDEAS?

What kind of bike do you want? How much do you want to make it your own?

If you want to go all out, I would check out the frame builders forum or the Alt-bikes forum. Forget make it your own; they will show you how to make it yourself!

If you're not ready to jump into that pool, I recommend going to a local bike co-op if you have one and learning how to be your own mechanic. Some shops will offer classes too.

After that a get yourself a basic toolkit like this one: http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ils&ProdID=556 and a tube of grease and have fun!!!

Of course most important is to post lots of pics to bike forums every step of the way.

Fun! I've done several. The bit about the co-op and tools still applies.

Here's some great inspiration!!!

Cool! Do you think it would be better to just get a Pista and get better parts as time goes on?

Personally, I don't. Lots of other people will think it's a great idea.

Two reasons: First, unless you will be riding at the track, I think a road bike is more comfortable and more practical than a track bike. Second, pistas are a dime a dozen. If you want something to "make your own" it's nice to start with something a little more unique. On the other hand, chrome is sexy.

If you want a new bike, check out the Redline 925 (http://www.redlinebicycles.com/adultbikes/925.html). I think it's a great looking bike, reasonably priced, and not every hipster ******bag™ will be riding one. Stop into the fixed/single speed forum for lots of ideas, opinions, and options, most of which will be different than this one.

Thank you!

I personally have seen 2 people riding track bikes/Fixes in my city.
