Moving truck options

Hey all - we're looking at renting a moving truck for April's upcoming move. Any suggestions? Right now UHaul is the cheapest we've found at about $800...

I think I used Uhaul when I moved from RI to Colorado last April.

I've heard good things about Penske, too. I think it depends on where you're going - where the truck will end up. No harm in seeing how much they'd charge as compared to your UHaul estimate.

I just got rid of my truck two days ago. Not getting another one. Wanna lend it?

Seriously, what I wish I could find is a trucker or something that's looking to fill up his semi. I got a quote from Penske, Budget and Uhaul. Budget has been cheapest by at least a few hundred. I realize you get what you pay for, but I'll take my chances.

I'll lend it to you for $3,000. Afterwards you can give it back...or do whatever.

Do you have a truck stop near you? You could put a flyer up there, but maybe it's too short notice...

Try contacting a freight company.

Used to be a Buyer in Purchasing --- get quotes, quotes and quotes - especially for moving stuff out of state. Also include the aspect of if the company has to pack anything themselves and any other extra terms.

It takes some time - but it's well worth it - best to be done on April's end. I just put my stuff and my Mom's stuff into storage - and I got probably 8 quotes - and they ranged all over the board.

Get at least 3 valid company's quotes (spend a good half a day devoted to this so you are fresh with all the options and costs they suggest) - plus they have to be fully insured - and you have to feel comfortable with them too - so talk with them a bit as well.

And ... if when talking to them - that they can suggest - HEY - why don't you do it this way ... investigate that too.

You guys are soooo cute.

I'd consider U-Haul. I've had good luck with them in the past for local and long distance moves. Their trucks are usually decently clean, its easy to get stuff in and out, and they are at least fairly well maintained.

The only issue I have with U-Haul is...they put speed governors on their trucks.

True that. Guess they rather have people die by falling asleep at the wheel out of boredom (especially on the stretch of I-10 between San Antonio and El Paso) than speeding. However, for most things, the price is right, and I use them fairly often to rent trucks and trailers to move large amounts of stuff when it would be more than 3-5 trips with my pickup, or if the weather is inclement.

Not on the 14ft Box truck I rented to move from CT to New Mexico last month! That truck could go like a mo'fo'. I even towed my pickup behind it on a tow dolly.

UHaul was a good route for me to go. The price was about the same as Penske, I got plenty of miles and the rental and return process was fairly easy. If you are gong more than 1,000 miles they give you a newer truck anyways. I was totally happy with my UHaul experience.

Wait, you got rid of your truck before moving to Texas? I think you've got it backwards.

When my GF moved from Austin to DC she got 1/3 of a semi for pretty cheap. I'll ask her tomorrow who she used.

Probably for the best. On a couple of occasions the Kimble County sheriff and I have not seen eye to eye on what is a safe speed for that particular stretch of road. On both occasions, however, I deferred to his better judgment.

April, Try to find a freight broker in your area. They use online bulletin boards and post the specifics of your load and what you are willing to pay. I have broker I use here in Dallas. Not sure if she works in Nebraska or if they even deal in this type of stuff.

Do you know anyone who works in shipping in your area? That might be a good starting place. Feel free to PM if you have questions.

UHaul is the worst IMO for a long distance move, I would only use them for local moves.Their trucks have always been in bad shape when I got them. Penske has been the best for me.

Yeah, but I bought a smaller car (gas mileage!), so I had to get rid of the truck. I doubt it would have carried all my stuff anyway.

jsharr, thanks for the tips. I'll see if I can find a freight broker.

I found Penske MUCH cheaper.

Edit: We rented a 17 ft. Penske truck. It too had a speed governor.

Never used, but I've heard good things about Penske, but all their qoutes were too high for me when I inquired, can't hurt to ask though.

I've used Uhaul for all my truck needs. But beware, don't expect a truck to be where you "reserved" it. It can be someplace completely different. When I was going to school in balitmore, I reserved a truck and trailer to pick up my 68 Mustang, and i reserved it at what appeared to be a well stocked Uhaul center. Well, when the day came and I went to go pick it up, nope it ain't there. Then they gave me the wrong directions and ended up taking the loop around Baltimore 3/4 the way in the wrong direction to find the other Uhaul center. Really screwed up my scheduled...

April.

Just got off the phone with my broker, and she says most brokers will not take residential/household type stuff due to insurance reasons. Did not ask for an in depth explanation.

Anyway, my idea, as usual was wrong and bad. Do I have to go to the dog house again?!
