75 students arrested in drug sting at San Diego State University

Geez, what's up with the kids these days? Aside from the moral issues and the disregard for the law, I'm also disappointed in the outright stupidity in their operations. I thought college students are supposed to be the smart ones.

College drug sting snags justice, security majors, scores of others

Some excerpts:

"They weren't picky about who they sold to... undercover officers would simply call them and say, 'Hey, I heard you deal. Will you sell to me?' And they did."

"Among those arrested, 75 were students, one of them a criminal justice major charged with possession of guns and cocaine... One student allegedly dealing cocaine was a month short of obtaining a master's degree in homeland security"

"Officials say the evidence seized... includes four pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana and 350 ecstasy pills. Authorities also took one shotgun, three semiautomatic pistols and $60,000. In all, authorities confiscated more than $100,000 worth of drugs"

"Mosler described the students as "mid-level distributors" who were selling more than a person might buy for personal use. He identified Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi as the two fraternities involved. In the latter case, firearms were found in the house"

It doesn't come as a big surprise to most that college kids sell weed to each other, but this is some crazy stuff. Cocaine and guns might be taking it a bit far... You think of some hardcore dealers having stuff like that... not some frats guys and master's students.

It's not clear from the article that the drugs and guns are related. I'm sure most frat houses (or at least a lot of them) have a couple of pistols and rifles.

The guy across the hall from me sophomore year was almost certainly dealing marijuana...probably not much else, though.

I never really think about the nefarious things people do under the table, so it didn't strike me until after the year was over that the reason people tended to knock on his door, go in for 20 seconds, then leave without saying a word to anyone else in the hall was because they were doing "business." He was definitely small-time compared to this though.

I remember one time he left his door open while he ran a quick errand and a guy wandered in, poked around for a second, then left, came back, and left again. I'd seen him before so I didn't stop him, but I mentioned it to him as soon as he got back. He nearly flipped out, slammed his door and started digging around. I guess his stash probably got lifted.

I don't know. These days, pretty much everyone is expected to attend college, even those who wouldn't have in times past. While it may have been the intellectual elite populating your local university in the past, said elite now shares the halls with Joe Schmoe and Bill Blockhead.

That's why I never did nor never will attend college: It's what they expect you to do.

Ha, don't give the older generations too much credit. Back when I went to Cal (AKA "Berkeley"), in the dorm my freshman year the first floor called themselves the "peckerheads" and they did nothing but party; the floor constantly looked like a disaster area. Probably half of them dropped out of school by the end of the first or second quarter. The funny thing is a schoolmate from my high school who was pretty conservative and who pledged to a sorority her first year, she was on the peckerhead floor. I don't know how she survived.

You can get your degree at home now! You can major in Business Accounting or Gun Repair. Also deal drugs from the safety of your flat.
