I ran today

One of my goals this year is to be participate in a Triathlon. Towards that end, I ran for the sake of running, something I haven't done since Mar 05. This time I am going to avoid all the stupid things that let me give up the sport.. I
- got arch supports straightaway.
- am going to limit my MPW to < 6 the first two weeks and gradually increase it.
- am going to take it easy and not try to erase any PRs. Ill gladly take 8 and 7 minute miles over ITBs or shin splints.
- am ABSOLUTELY going to stretch, religiously.

And now to improve my swimming that I learnt last year.

Went out and got some running shoes and other stuff Saturday. Went out that day and ran four miles. We have a sprint triathlon coming up in a couple months. Not sure if I'll do it, since I'm starting running to do something different than biking.

Are you doing any Firm races?

http://firm-racing.com/events.asp

I've done some duathalons but a separated ac joint and bad rotator cuffs make me scared of a mass start swim....

or any swim......

Ouch on the AC joint.

Thanks for the link! These are a lot closer and easier to get too than the ones I had in mind. I am really green on the swim as in my front crawl is just coming together. Backstroke is no problem but I dunno if its legal in a tri. I am going to give myself 4 months, including a 3 week period of inactivity, to train. Lets see how it goes.

You can do whatever stroke you want. If it is a pool swim you aren't allowed to walk on the bottom, but that is about it for rules.

Do it, do it, do it!!!!!

Spend the money on good shoes, but I'm sure you knew that. I really liked brooks shoes when I use to run in back in the day.

BTW

Hillary Clinton seem to have some good running shoes. (joked taken from the Hillary car thread)

lol..

I got a good pair of asics 1090s a few years back. Saw about 40 miles of use so I figure I can get another 150 or so out of it. The new inserts help though..

I've started running a lot as well over the past month and a half. Never used to get far because of my knees but I think cycling has done them good because I'm up to about 25-30 miles per week now with no significant pain. My long run on Saturday was 7 miles and I managed to do it without stopping which I would have thought impossible two months ago. I'm not fast right now but I'm really noticing improvements in that over the past two weeks. I also kicked @$$ on a road ride the other day so it's starting to pay off in other areas as well. My long term goal is to run the Gasparilla Marathon here in Tampa next March.

I am a strong swimmer - it is always the best part of my tri & I still prefer pool swims. I don't mind the thrashing/bashing of open water swims, but since I don't have a wetsuit I tend to find them a little chilly... In my neck of the woods I'd say the pool swim/open water ratio is 50/50.

most of the people who run would love to settle for 8 or 7 minute miles.

i find running as cross training has really helped advance my cycling. makes sense that being fit all around makes me a better cyclist. i like it, but with moderation as it is so darn hard on a body. later.

^^^^ sure. first he said settle.

second, there seems to be a misconception that all runners log 7 minute miles. look at marathon results and see how many 7 minute'ers compared to 9 or 10 minute'ers and i bet you see more 9 & 10s. i aint saying what is fast and what isnt. im just saying. later.
