Tis the Season ...

for MULCH!

Ahhhh, that good ole stuff, aerates the ground, keeps the moisture in and just plain makes your garden look downright pretty.

And boy some of that stuff smells like arse. Probably laced with some horse poo too, dunno but some people have been out sprucing up the front yards - and I ride by and gag. <shudder>

Course it's still not as bad as have a snit wagon be in front of you on the street (there's been times I could NOT escape it - BLECH) or go by multiple fields full of some nice fermented liquid poo sprayed onto the field and not worked in (those kill me).

Ahhhh Spring

Part of my daily commute takes me past a truck stop and in the spring and summer I often am passed by cattle trucks sometimes full sometimes empty but no matter what they still stink! P.U

No kidding! I would say that we could probably feed the whole Costa Rican army, but that wouldn't say very much. There is no army.

How about you come visit and help us eat some fruit and veggies?

Sorry to be contrarian, but commercially-available mulch is over-rated and overdone. The vast majority of people don't know how to use it properly- an example: it should never, ever be piled up against tree trunks, but look around and you'll see that all over the place. Second, most commercial mulch is created from ground up trees and other matter. Guess what- many of these trees were cut down due to disease, and even though the manufacturer may say that the mulch is sterilized, I wouldn't assume that it is. And even if the mulch was sterilized, there's still a good likelihood that various and sundry chemicals (insecticides, fertilizers, etc.) are in there, and there's no way to know what they are.

A better choice, IMO, is natural ground cover (ivy, vinca, etc.) and don't overlook leaves, and compost!

I don't have the lighting for a garden, but I really really want to start doing an herb garden. Hopefully they do ok with a small amount of sunlight.

called 'patty pan', or 'white' squash. A very mild squash. don't really need to skin them.
