Should I be worried?

My blood pressure machine I just got tells me that I have an "irregular heart beat". Should I be worried?

If it's a home machine I'm sure they are for approximation only. Make an appt as soon as you can to get tested. And try not to let this stress you out. You'll only get yourself all upset.

You should be worried enough to get to your doctor and get checked out. Of course, it could be your new machine that's "irregular", rather than your heart.

check your own pulse at the wrist or in the neck and see if there are missed or skipped beats, or if it is noticeably variable.

Tachycardia is actually more common than people think. Still, have yourself checked out by a physician and not some machine that's probably made of half-defective Chinese parts.

Depends on what that means. You might just be having premature ventricular contractions which aren't really a big deal

I have an irregular heart beat too. Found out when I went to donate blood one time. I was worried, but didn't have any of the symptoms that they asked about. They said I was fine. But see your doctor to be sure.

You're still posting. So I would consider that a good sign.

And made an appointment. I'll follow up in this thread after I go. I'm still alive, so it probably isn't a HUGE deal.

If you're a zombie, does it tell you "no heart beat"?

I have an irregular heartbeat.

It usually goes: thump.......thump.......thump.......thump...

But occasionally it goes: thump.......thump......................thump.......thump...

and occasionally: thump.......thump.......thump.thump.......thump.......thump...

My cardiologist doesn't seem very concerned about it, though.

A resting pulse should be a bit irregular, AFAIK. It also varies when you breathe in and out.

Roger that. It's called sinus arrhythmia, and most people have it. No big deal. In fact, everyone (everyone, that is, who isn't about to go into ventricular fibrillation or asystole) has micro-variations from beat to beat. It's when those variations go away that you run into trouble. One of the more interesting demonstrations of chaos theory!

Yep...only time there's no variation is when the BPM = 0.

I had intended to follow up on this thread, but never got the chance, so here I go.

I went in for a routine physical and I asked my doctor. By an aural check, he said there didn't appear to be a problem, but he wanted to check to be certain, so he hooked me up and got a cardiogram.

I'm A-Okay!

The other parts of the physical went fine, with the doctor telling me (again) to restrict my caloric intake. But otherwise, blood pressure and pulse was perfectly normal.

Only weird thing was that when I first walked in, the nurse checked my heart rate, came out to be 63.

Then, towards the end of the one hour physical, the EKG said my heart rate was 49.

Which would imply that I'm very fit.

Except I'm really not, since I'm overweight and all.

So yeah, there it is.
