I figured it wouldn't be long before someone posted some drum corps...

Here's Dustin Schletzer from 2002; too bad the camera's framerate sucks, because it's hard to see the singles at 4:09 and the individual flams early on:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ccotkOQLyak

I'm looking for a vid of the shout section at the end of BD 2002's Blue Rondo, too.

One of the cooler non-marching drum compositions I've heard (I think this was the "Easy, Teenage New York Version"):

Had to add some stuff from my era (although I didn't march SCV, and I'm not even a drummer; you'll never see videos of contrabasses, though, because we're just not as visually interesting!):

Krupa soloing on match sticks at the end of this one. That guy made drums cool.

No, I'm saying that being a drummer does not make one cool by default.

I've met some drummers...and some were dicks.

I met this guy back in 2004. He was super cool and let me check out his drums (the same kit in the vid actually). He does a lot more than just death metal. One talented cat indeed.

Derek is a close friend of mine. I'm damn proud he is finally getting some proper recognition outside of the death metal genre and is on the Modern Drummer festival bill this year. It's long overdue. I got my nice maple Sonor double bass kit through him when he was still working at Rez Drums.

There are a bunch of lesson/clinician videos of him, too -- and yeah, he sounds like a cool guy.

I guess I admire the dedication and chops, but I fail to see what's musical about it if you know what I mean. Maybe I'll think differently if I check out his other stuff. Blast beats to me just seem like a child's tantrum.

I know what you mean, too. It's basically "musical gymnastics", but I think it's still fun to watch.

The coolest recorded drum solo I've heard, IMO, is on Harry Connick Jr's She album, starting at 4:46 on "Joe Slam and The Spaceship". Take all the superfluous notes out of most of the solos in this thread, halve the number of the remaining notes, then just leave the groove intact.

For Latin Jazz drummer goodness, look for Poncho Sanchez and Francisco Aguabella. I've met both (actually, Professor Aguabella teaches at UCLA) and both are kickass guys.

May be its me, but i've been noticing lately that there seems to be a shortage of truly classically trained percussionists. Even some of the marching bands solos lack basic rudements. Just because they're basic, doesn't mean they sound cheap or crappy. One of the best fills I ever learned was a double paradiddle around the toms with alternating bass drums. I don't know, maybe it's just me...
