What exactly was idiotic about the claims????

I love the fact that facts and figure can be ignored, because it might hurt someone's feelings.

Did you even read the article? What's the point of stigmatizing obese individuals? The headline is nothing but a lurid headline to attract readers.

I'd also like to point out they don't address ANY statistical trends to support their claim in the article. The make a general statement that a person with a BMI over 30 consumes more food in relation to body mass.....big surprise there.....never heard of such a thing

They don't even remotely provide a causal relationship, nor even a correlation statistically.

There are sooo many other factors then this article shares. Its an opinion and would be interesting to sit down and talk to them and ask why they didn't produce any other factors to the article. Its sad and I'm surprised the editor would allow it.

Yes the L.A Times article was actually dismissive of the whole paper that was printed in the Lancet, taking the even-handed approach without seriously looking at the paper that was presented.

http://www.thelancet.com/

Try reading the paper "Transport Policy is Food Policy".

I actually think they presented their case quite well.

UHHHH what were the cattle bred for.

Not for pretty postcard models for people vacationing in Nebraska.

An interesting comment at the bottom of the page (from the link in the original post):

"And how can I defend a friend of mine who consumes thousands of calories so he can get on his bicycle and go for 100-mile rides -- only to end up at the very same place he started from, only hungrier?"

Don't expect her to find any sympathy on this forum!

Sure fat people consume more. Pregnant women do too! Medical advances that prolong life also cause more energy consumption. Long-living, thin vegetarians might consume more than fat people—because they live longer.

It is easy to blame someone else for the fact that we all contribute to the problem of global warming. But even that misses the point we need to change soon. Likely sooner than even the pessimists believe.

Yah now smug LA motorists can blame the fat dudes for global warming.

Articles like the one in the OP just give Flat-Earther, Anthropogenic Global Warming Deniers more ammo. Also, as Tom says, the article never gives a convincing corollary relationship. It's like that BS in Ben Stein's Expelled where they say Charles Darwin is responsible for the Holocaust. Bunch of idiots.

It's called "filler". You know, they need to pad out their paper and it's always preferred to come up with a sensational, attention-grabbing headline. Content and substance are secondary. Filler.

Not the sort that drives an SUV down the street, so they can get into an electric tricycle at Piggly Wiggly, so they can buy a couple gallons of Dr. Pepper, and a bag of pork rinds.
