"If you get fat I'll leave you..."

Oh boy, the backlash from this thread could be interesting.

The title is something my friend Joe said to his wife. Now, before you get too hard on 'ol Joey, please know its taken out of context somewhat. He's a good guy. He's a handful, for his friends and his wife at times, but at the end of the day the world is a better more interesting place because he's in it.

Anyway, what he said sparked an interesting conversation at work the other day and I thought it'd be fun to discuss here. Personally I can see both sides of the argument. If you're with someone and love them you'll look past certain imperfections. However, I've always thought how you look on the outside is a reflection of what's on the inside though. It's not the whole story certainly, but I've always thought it shows discipline, self pride, and dedication to have a fit bod. Or maybe a big dollop of vanity? Like I said, what's on the outside can be a reflection of what's on the inside - good or bad. My point is that getting fat could be an indication of more fundamental differences...

Anyway, topic de jour. Have fun.

do you mean 10-30 lbs overweight 'fat', or riding in the electric wheel-chair/shopping cart because walking around the krogers is too taxing 'fat'?

Presuming the latter isn't the case, I'd take a few extra pounds (even 50 would be fine) over some image obsessed psycho with esteem issues.

My wife is thin, but I'd prefer she'd just be active and not worry about that sort of thing at all.

Whoa. You did not just go there.

Some people just can't help it due to health reasons. They can exercise, eat a good healthy diet and do the best they can but sometimes it just won't help. Sure their body may be having trouble but that says nothing about the kindness or love in their heart.

I told my gf that she was fat; she left; moved back in with her mother.

She used to run road races with me, but she just stopped doing everything. Well, not everything. She loved her food. :

Tried to get her into cycling, she has a phobia about being on the bike.

Took her on a MUP to ride hoping that would help. If anyone came within 100 yards of her, she'd stop to wait until they passed for fear of crashing into them no matter if they were riding a bike or running or walking. It was all in her head.

Hope, someday, she comes and picks up the rest of her stuff she left in my house. Her mail is piling up, too.

BAH! :whatever:

My wife started getting fat and I told her to pack her bags. Turns out she was pregnant with our child, thats when I packed my bags and split. I'm sure she is doing fine and the weight came off, but she probably still has the kid. jk

This is a rough quote from some other post on this topic that I agree with.

If you expect to be the only person your spouse is physically intimate with, then you owe
your spouse the courtesy of not letting yourself go.

Siu - I totally agree with you on this point. There are people who have medical conditions that put weight on them (my cousin is diabetic and she gained 10 to 20 pounds when she started using insulin). However, I do also see a lot of people using this argument as a crutch. Not saying that they are bad people at all though. Some of my best friends are very over weight. I don't care that they are, I still love 'em to death, but I am not attracted to them physically either.

Heh, my weight will go up and down throughout the year as much as 20 pounds. I had a bit of extra pudge this winter. There's never an excuse for the latter though IMO.

Perhaps that extra doughiness around your midsection is slowing you down. It's pretty obvious in your avatar.

I would not expect anymore from my wife than she would from me. I dont hold that double standard that it's ok for guys to be fat, but not the women. FWIW, we've both shot up our weight in the last 6 years to unhealthy levels. It's been eaiser for me to work it off. I think I have motivated her to do too, cause she is really trying very hard to do so.

In all seriousness, for many years, my wife has pointed out extremely overweight people as we're out and about and told me "if I get like that, shoot me".

Now of course, I don't own a gun, and I wouldn't dream of shooting her if something were to happen to her and she gained a bunch of weight, but I do understand her points - of which I believe there are two. Firstly, she doesn't want to have the difficulties in getting around that some folks do. Secondly, for her (and for me also), there's an element of self-respect. Obviously, there are many factors involved, and some of them are beyond peoples' control.

Hopefully, we're not judging them harshly - but both of us do know that remaining within the generally accepted healthy range is within our control, and we have a determination to not let so many pounds pile up that we lose hope and quit trying.

I plan on staying healthy for myself and my wife if i ever get married. I'd expect her to do the same if it's within her means.
