I hate most cities. Don't care much about BMX one way or the other.

Well yesterday I got chased down twice by cars on my BMX, I'd say why but you guys will say I shouldn't have down it in the first place blah blah blah and it could be solved with one thing the city doesn't want to do.

skate park?

My old town was anti everything outdoors. Skating, bmxing, inline. Anything that didn't fit into their nice little box of sports didn't get money. For 2 decades it caused a lot of grief and annoyance (violence) because kids were bored. Heck they wouldn't even put up basketball courts. It was an old town, run by old foogies for old foogies...

If yours is anything like that, get out as fast as you can. I watched my home town go from a nice place to live to a **** hole of drugs and gangs. When you don't give kids options there is only so much left to do.

Basically, there isn't a skatepark here that allows bmx but they allow skating, blades and scooters. People have gone to the city and the city is dumb and doesn't do anything. Kids wouldn't get run over by cars and the stores wouldn't have to shoo us off their property. I been in some skateparks that I'm not supposed to be in and the cleaning people say, "it's cool it isn't like you aren't doing drugs or graffitti, you just want to bike." I don't know this is dumb, the city spent like a million and something to make a pretty looking bridge used for people to walk over and noone uses it at all. I'm sure if people raised money that the city still wouldn't let use because they hate bmx. I think half their reason is BMX destroys parks faster when that doesn't imply if there are no pegs or plegs. I'd like to go to a park for once without being paranoid about someone coming to run me out.

/end rant

Hey Fuzzy...why don't you BMX kids get together and have a petition signed to allow the kids to bring the bikes into the skate park? You can go around the neighboring areas and have people sign it, explaining the dangers and how it keeps the kids from being in other places that aren't safe for riding. Go and stand in front of grocery stores (ask permission from the manager first) and perhaps you might be able to catch more people. Just be sure to be patient, respectful and very polite. Smile a lot and have your bike right next to you. Ask bike shop owners if you can stand in front of their shop and get signatures.

Don't forget that there will be some people who might be rude and not very understanding. Still be polite to those people because they just don't understand. Smile politely and thank them anyway. That leaves a good impression.

Do that for a couple of weeks on the weekend and after school and see what result you get.

People are already doing something like this and things are looking grim. If they allow one to be built it isn't going to be around for another few years.

Fuzzy, building a new one costs money and they will have to find property to put it on. Then there's insurance. That's a hard battle to fight.

That is why I mentioned perhaps you can have it signed to allow bikes into the current one.

It's a start. And upon presentation to the City you can explain how it would be more cost efficient if they only allowed bikes into it too.

The skate/bike park here allows bikes and then skaters in on alternate days. Perhaps that would work?

The people already found land they just need an okay. And for the already exsisting parks they're noobs and said their trannys aren't made for bikes except I was there yesterday and it was freaking amazing except it wasn't worth getting chased.

Hmmm.

I'm the type that would ask to see a copy of the design prints for it and try to ask around here to see if BMXs can safely be in that park.

I wonder if bpohl knows anyone. Isn't he a city planner? He might, ya know.

Good luck with it Fuzzy

There's a proposed skatepark for our town too. In a way I object to the term "skatepark" as it doesn't imply that bikes belong there, but there's plenty of BMX kids here that would use it, probably more than skaters.

I had a talk with our shop BMXpert today about an idea I had: He has some community service hours to perform, so to take care of it, he could promote a BMX show in our town, all proceeds going to the skatepark. I'm sure with a shop affiliation some of our manufacturers would be all for it, and how can the skaters object to bikes when money is going to the park for everyone to use?

I have to admit, I'm not into BMX now, though I did start there back in the 70's. Of course it was BMX racing back then, still it was what us kids wanted to do, so we made jumps, tore up the neighborhoods during the week and went to the track on the weekends. These days parents are so overprotective of their kids they're not even allowed to ride down to the corner store, much less hitting concrete ramps. Much tougher to get support, but don't give up...even moreso, don't burn bridges and get everyone against you.

Perhaps you can hit your local BMX-friendly shop for some ideas and help. I'd help you if I could.

There actually is a place that lets bikes in twice a week for a couple of hours. Went there once, it was really crowded I couldn't even get a run. Plus the place is 30 mins away and really small so it isn't worth it.

Might wish to mention to the powers that be that BMX is an olympic event now.
They are screwing with your 2012 chances.
