They have any idea why the engine caught fire and then blew up like it did? I also doubt he died at the hospital, given how long the car was on fire and the massive explosion...

I haven't followed NHRA for a long time, but I can tell you that Scott's father is one of the most interesting stories in drag racing. I know I appreciated him back in '90-'91.

This is a tragic loss of a man who, by most accounts, was a genuinely good human being.

time of death is just when a doctor finally signs off on it. A person could be clinically dead through like hours of cpr but until an MD says so, they're not d-e-a-d dead.

Wow, that's really sad. My dad is huge into drag racing, so I'm surprised he hadn't told me about it.

That crash was rather huge, but I've seen some crashes where you SWEAR the driver must have died, and he walks away, or has relatively minor injuries. The cars are very safe all things considered, and the emergency crew is fast.

The huge explosion was due to the car hitting a concrete wall at the end of the track at well over 200 mph. Poor track design was the major contributor to the loss of life here. Track end was reconfigured for the finals on Sunday.

Scott flew through here fairly often. He was the only guy I ever met whose car made more horsepower than his 747.

RIP Scott.
