Yup - 1998 was the last of the air-cooled, and a clean one seems to cost a pretty good penny - more than a comparable 996.

Pig or no, I'm probably going to end up with a 996. Can't afford a 997 yet, and have grown tired of the air-cooled 911. I'm getting soft in my old age and demand decent air conditioning. Besides, they are a whole lot of fun to drive and the more I look at the 996 the more the aesthetics are growing on me.

I think this is one of the most diverse car threads I have seen in a while.

Attached is a picture of my fathers Speedster. The picture was take in the early 60's. That car was sold to Chuck Mitchell (as in Joni Mitchell's the singer Husband) in 1965 to give my dad a Down payment on a 1965 356C Cabriolet. Second picture.

My biased fav is a 1970 LeMans Sport Convertible....having one in my garage. Mine is nearly identical to this photo but that is a 71. 70's had gill on the front fenders.

Man that is definitely a case of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". They are called Lancers in Australia and the standard car has to be one of the ugliest things on the road. Nothing on it comes together and its just a mish-mash of lines going everywhere. Those 2 cars have a better nose treatment than the base car but the previous CE model has much nicer, cleaner and better resolved lines.

Regards, Anthony

After I took the pic today I saw a 9, and have to agree it is much better looking. The 6 I think is the best looking of all of the Evos. I'm a little confused here because it appears the base here is called a gallant. I'll have to look into that.

I've seen the same Mitsubishi model called a Gallant, Lancer or Mirage depending on what market its in. In Australia the sedan and coupe were called a Lancer and the hatch was called a Mirage but in the USA they were ALL called Mirage and it looks like they are called Gallant in Japan.

Anyway the CE model was VERY popular amongst young people because it looked so good and was a favorite for body kits like this one,

Pretty enough to bump an old thread.

I like how Jeremy used it to answer the question, "Can a car ever be art?"

"It doesn't drive well, it's not been built with much care, and it's hopelessly impractical. What Alfa has built, then, is not a car, it's a centerfold."

Not saying they aren't peppy, but in the past year, I've had the chance to drive and work on a lot of fast cars. I think speed and beauty can reach a happier medium than the Grand Nationals attained.

And despite all your rage, you're still just a rat in a cage. The good news is that you may be able to break your rusty cage and run.

Awe come on, at least post a shot of a GNX. Unlike the regular Grand National, they were more than "peppy".

There isn't much this car can't do... well, except maybe pull girls.
