I snapped this pic in Vienna in August 2005. This was before Smart cars had started making their way into the US. By the time they were officially released in the US, I believe this roadster model had been discontinued.

See...I'd buy something like that.....the current smart car looks like someone slapped it with a cricket bat.

It's just a different model. The current ForTwo model I believe was also sold alongside this sportier model. But then this one was discontinued at some point.

This one doesn't look like some one took a 2 by 6 to it.

Continuing with the go-kart/dune buggy thing, there was this one particular model of the Smart made only in 2002 I think.

WOW- that is a UGLY car-
heck I got a short ban for a mild suggestion involving payback and a not too lethal 22-that poor car nearly blinded me!!
it makes a normal Smart look like an XKE

This one deserves to go to the Not-so-beautiful car thread.

I can't believe I'm defending Fortwo but for what it is, it's a sharp little car. Given the design constraints the only way it could look better is tandem seating which is usually a nonstarter with most Americans.

It's true, for what it is, it isn't awful...it is the first modern microcar in our market, and I wanted it to be awesome... It's just so middle of the road though. It's not that cheap, expensive to maintain since you have to take it to Benz dealers, and for such a tiny car it doesn't get that great of mileage... And I know it's renowned for its safety, but I don't think those tests factor in some pretty important real-world factors.

To each his own though. I may have just let my initial impressions of it bias me.

I've had the "pleasure" of driving one and it's not really that bad, the transmission obviously is programmed to get as many miles as possible out of the clutch which throws some people off, but it was roomy on the inside pretty comfortable around town and easy to park. Yeah it's slow, but no slower than many of the cars I drove in the 80s. As for the economy, just driving around and based on the rough fill up to fill up method I got 39mpg which is pretty good for a non-hybrid car in stop and go, but I've got a light foot. Why it doesn't have a diesel I don't know because a small oil burner in that car and then you would be talking some serious MPGs.

It's not surprising when Volkswagen loses $6.25 million on each Veyron they sell. So when you buy a VW, you are also paying for some rich guy's Veyron.

    This.

I like microcars, but if I was in the market for a Smart, I'd probably opt for the Scion IQ instead.

OTOH, there are off the shelf kits to stuff a Suzuki GSXR engine into Smart cars...

Like JBC said, I prefer Imgur myself. Or, click on it until it's full screen, copy image location, and post it between [img][/img]

How the heck can it cost VW over $8M to build each Veyron? Are they paying US workers $30/hour to build it?
