I think rally cars aren't so beautiful as static art, but rather they are poetry in motion, and for me it's the sight of a flying Subaru!

My favorite "real" car of all time. Even owned one for a while, although it never looked this good.

Better than pics -- here's one of the coolest rally videos I've seen yet:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nYhiJeRPgdw

I don't know the driver's name at the very beginning, but he tells about doing some testing on a gravel road that was the same length as a F1 course, and they were getting times on their gravel course that were just four seconds slower than the F1 cars were on theirs.

Brutally, beautifully pure function. God, those Group B cars were fast..

Yeah, and it shows that rally fans are more insane than the drivers!

This is my favorite rally video, it was really well edited:

Group B makes every other form of racing pale in comparison. Nothing like having the power to weight ratio of a F1 car and racing it on streets like that.

On a side note, I got to mess around with a Ford RS200

Not when it was this car. The only RS200 IMSA GTO made. 800 hp...1650 pounds. oh god, what a car. It was so fast, it had to race in the V8 class.

how different is that from the base model?
Some of the short comings of the RS200, that I can recall, was twitchy handling from shorter wheelbase, poor brakes and primitive torque split.
Just wondering how well that handles on tarmac.

Porsche 959, and that should just about do it for attractive rally cars.

I was reading about Group B, and one of the things that led to its demise was an incident where a driver came up over a hill to find the road crowed with spectators. He couldn't stop in time, and plowed into them, injuring 30-something people and killing three.

Calling some of those paths "streets" is being awfully generous. Four lanes of skill on a half-lane dirt road.

Lordy. I'd read that the 959 was intended for Group B, but really couldn't picture it. That helps.

Yeah, the end was being dictated with all the casualties. Several drivers died in the final year in gruesome fiery crashes. The 959 wasn't quite ready by the time the series was killed. Neither was the F40, which came from the 288GTO Evo. Personally, I'd like to have a Lancia 037:

I went to lunch with a business associate today, and saw one of these in the restaurant lot. I'd never seen one before, and did a double-take. It was one of the most beautiful cars I'd ever seen in person.

A Bentley Continental convertible, light metallic blue with a cream leather interior and birds-eye maple accents. It was stunning. Better bring your checkbook, though.... close to $200,000 a copy.
