i'm scared...i think i've been a victim of identity theft or something...

i just need to vent...and maybe get advice/support...

i went to the bike shop today to pick up my bike after a tuneup. i tried to use my debit card. it got denied. thought it was odd...but i just gave them my american express to pay. after i got in the car, i called my bank to check my balance. NEGATIVE $1600!!!!!!! there was like $3000 in the account just a couple days ago!

so i speed home to get online and check my account online. sure enough...i'm at negative $1600. i look at the itemized charges. there's like $4000 in charges from "MARCOS GOIANIA BR"...it was done in 13 separate charges between $150 and $400 dollars in a 17 minute span this morning.

i did NOT approve any of these charges...and i have NO idea what "MARCOS GOIANIA BR" is. i have not lost my credit card...NO ONE has been in possession of my card except me...and no one has used my card except me and my girfriend (while i was with her).

i called my bank in desperation. i needed help! they made me file a claim...and it'll be between 10-90 days before a resolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 90 days?!?!? and no guarantee i'll get my money back?!?!?

i'm screwed. you have no idea how screwed i am. i don't even think all my bills for this past month have gone through...so when they try, it'll get rejected.

i just did a bunch of searches about other peoples experiences...TCF is NOT customer friendly.

i may have to jump off a tall building...

i don't know what to do. i have $30 to my name right now...what i have in my wallet...

i think the merchant or thief is in Goiania, Brazil. the "MARCOS" part...i have no clue...name of the business, name of a person...

god i hope TCF gives me my money back...and takes MUCH faster than 90 days...

A few months back someone stole all of the outgoing mail from my mailbox. It was a large stack of checks paying bills. That day they started cashing them. I caught it pretty quickly thanks to online banking. The bank took care of it all. Closed out that account, opened a new one, cancelled all the checks, arranged other payment for all the bills, and they refunded the money stolen. Took about a week to get cleared up. The bank I use was very helpful.

I hope your experience goes as well. You'll want to close that account and open a new one.

Your bank sucks. After this is solved, get a new bank. Lots of banks guarantee to solve this kind of issues in 24h.

Have you used your card at one of these places that still uses the old school card roller?

Who did you talk to at your bank? The first person to answer the phone? You should get to the highest level person with the most authority to fix things that you can, and explain your problems with bills and shortage of funds...see what they can do for you. Don't be satisfied with what a flunky tells you.

Most banks will give you a "loan" of the stolen amount, until the investigation is over, i had this happen with bank of america, and i had my money back within 1 week, even though they said it could take "up to 90" days.

When i say loan, i mean that they will refund the charges back to you, and then do the investigation. If they find that you DID make the charges, you will be liable for the refunded amount.

WHEN they find that you were trying to make a purchase in the US, a few hours after the 4500 was charged, then you will just keep the money. In the meantime, change your card, and bank account number..

someone got my amex card number a few years ago at a motel in St Louis. I got billed thousands for extravagant items like 200$ bath towels and 5 very expensive car stereos and many other things. Amex asked me what the last item I charged was. i told them, they sent me a new card the next day. Never heard a thing since. I also have a $250.00 master card to use on line for clothes and ebay and stuff. I never use my debit card anywhere I dont hand it to someone.

Sorry to hear about your problem. But in the future, don't use a debit card, just carry and use a regular credit card.

Cancel your debit & credit cards.
Call all three credit reporting agencies & put a "credit watch" on your profiles
Call your local police & file a report.

- and that will be the easy part -

alrighty...well, the visa security/fraud people gave me a call because of suspicious activity. seems someone had my credit card number and my pin number. they made a $3.66 purchase at some online merchant located in fayetville, ga...then they started charging like crazy to a motorhome company in brazil.

the actual recovery of my funds will still be through tcf customer service.

i'm going to file a police report first thing tomorrow morning.

all my cards and accounts are locked down. i'll be closing all the cards i don't need. and i'll be changing the account number of all the cards and accounts i'll be keeping.

i'm hoping i get my money back from tcf. all of it. and sooner than 90 days.

that's what i was wondering!!!! how on earth did someone get my pin number? NO ONE knows it! and the only place i use it at is the bank...and the atm...and i'm pretty much always alone!!!!!!

but according to visa security/fraud, this thief tried to use my pin somewhere in brazil. i don't even know what he'd try to use the pin for without having my card to stick in a machine...

do you have an old girlfriend or something? I dont know if they could produce a pin at random. Humm, I would immediately suspect an exwife of Brazilian descent. Sorry man, i will try to be serious. You know, at the bowling alley they use my debit card and we never type in the pin. maybe they dont always ahve to have it.

Best advice on this whole thread.

I've had identity theft. It involved a little work getting some forms notarized that the charges weren't mine but that was it. AMX and MC issued new cards within a day. AMX sent a new one by FedEx. I was out nothing.

Get rid of debit cards and use a credit card. Just pay it off with a check each month and it's the same as a debit card. Plus if you get a card with benefits (frequent flyer miles, cash rebate, bonuses, etc.), you come out ahead

There was actually an issue awhile back that some of the pin pads in gas stations were hacked and piping data to identity thief-type people. Rule of thumb, it's a bad idea to type your PIN number into anything except your bank's ATMs. Really, if you have a debit card, you should at least have the type that allows it to run as a credit card transaction. It's better just to avoid debit cards altogether for this very reason.

I hope you get your money back soon... this is a terrible thing that's happened to you

THere are many ways to getting a PIN. One clever one is to mount a very small camera such that it can watch you type it in. In some of the podunk ATM's they will actually record your info off the card as well as your PIN and simply make a new card with your info.

I would simply cancel the debit card. Even if you don't use your new debit card it's still tied to your cash account. You don't want that.
