Life sucks, but the people I work with are cool

Tomorrow morning, I have to take my faithful companion of 11 years to her final appointment. I have been accused many times of being a masochist, but to say this is one of the hardest things I've had to do in my life would be the understatement of the century.

I lead 3 conference calls and a meeting, all of which have been scrubbed. The timing is terrible because a major project I'm on is at a critical juncture. I told everyone that I'm calling in a large and just need people to do what I ask.

Everyone has been beyond cool in cutting me slack, and I'll do more than make it up to them.

BTW, the dog in the pic is totally blind, can't see the ball, and is dying from cancer.

It must be hard, but you're doing your friend a favor, and that's a good thing.

Good luck at work.

So sorry. It's painful to lose a pet, especially after 11 years. You are doing the right thing, even though I'm sure it will break your heart.

You dog is lucky to be able to exit this life, to leave the pain and suffering behind at the hand of someone who loves her and cares about her... To pass humanely and with dignity.

If only we humans... If only.

The dog is way more important than the project, you can make it up to your co-workers by cutting them the same slack when they need it.

God speed.

I've come into this thread several times today trying to think of the right thing to tell you.
I can't think of anything that might be of any real comfort to you at this time. Just know that I am thinking of you and the hard time your going through. The dog will be better off though. You are doing the right thing.

It is always the worse decision to make even when you know it is the right one. I hate it. I just lost my wheaten to cancer this past March. I hope the best for you.

It's over. I tried to hold it together at the vet's office, but fell apart when she collapsed in my arms at the end. We spent our last night together under the stars, and this morning, we took a walk followed by a three hour nap. We then had cheeseburgers for lunch and then less than an hour after that, it was over.

I've started every day for the past 11 years with a walk with her, and that's always been the first thing I've done when I get home. Life will now be very different.

In many ways, I've been lucky. They gave her a terminal diagnosis last Feb and told me she had 2-3 months to live if the medication worked. I remember wishing she'd be well enough enjoy my birthday. When that happened, I hoped that she could enjoy one more warm day, and then a trip to the beach. In the end, she lasted another 16 months, almost all of it good quality.

Note to self: the next time I sleep on the ground outside, I should clear out the dog poop if I don't want to lay in it...

It's painful but the important thing is to not mourn her passing, so much as be thankful that she entered your life. But it's not over, now time to find a new friend!

A new friend will find him when the time is right.

The best part about this whole story is the fact that you two got to share your lives together. The memories of her with your family are something that can never be replaced, be substituted or ever go away. She and your experiences together are etched in your heart and she will never be away from you. Physically yes but in your heart and spirit, no. I truly believe that a strong connection between you will always be there...

....It is for me and my dogs that have passed on to Heaven. I know they are waiting for me.

((hugs))

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts. I've known this day was coming for a long time and that what I did was absolutely the right thing.

You'd think that as you get older, you'd have an easier time coming to terms with death and the role it plays in life as you gradually lose friends, family, and companion animals. Life always goes on, but these experiences really take a lot out of you. I cannot fathom how people who have to deal with much more misfortune than I do cope. I have probably been blessed with better than average luck.

I have walk that path before you, it is a hard road.
When my wife and I decided to get a new dog, we went to a shelter, just to have a look. A puppy climbed into my wife's lap, and that little puppy is now a 100 lb pile of muscle and ears, with a tail that will clear a table, or bring tears to my eyes. It was funny how it chose my wife, the other puppies would play with us, but this one stayed with my wife the whole time, and would keep coming back. When the time is right, one will choose you too.
Our previous dog, Max, is in a can on the top of a book case, I had to move him recently. I had to stop doing what I was doing for a while.

If there are no dogs in heaven, I want to go where they went.

banerjek-

So sorry to hear about your pup..

It sounds like you were as loving and devoted to her, as she was to you. She had a wonderful life thanks to you, and is now at peace.

Someone much wiser than I said to me once: "While the memories of those who have passed many times start off as painful reminders of their absence, with time they become powerful and positive reminders of their presence."
