Microsoft won't take all this bashing by Apple lying down, no sir

I read a news item yesterday that Microsoft will retaliate for all the Vista bashing in recent ads for the Mac with its own ad campaign.

This should get interesting.

After moving to Vista SP1 I would lay low if I was them. This is worse than the original release.

Maybe Steve (B) will throw a chair at Steve (J)?

What I find funny about the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads, is that the "Mac" seems like a pompous jerk, while the PC seems like an aloof, but funny guy. If I had to pick either to hang out with, it would definitely be "PC".

Not that the commercials have changed my choice of computer (been a Mac user for a long long time).

Not enjoying Vista a bit.
And I welcomed every other upgrade as they came along.
The new laptop is also garbage.

I'm ready to go to Mac.
Or any computer made by Assos.

You have got to love the Microsoft business model. Make a product that is broken, force people to buy it by not offering any other product. Then make people pay for the fixes to the original broken product, which themselves are broken. Repeat. And it has worked very well for them.

Microsoft's current success is eerily reminiscent of GM in the 1980's. I was selling Mercedes cars to disgruntled Cadillac owners who were throwing in the towel after 20 years of faithful Caddy ownership and buying Benz DIESELS (just imagine how pissed off you have to be to buy a kraut diesel car after owning Caddys). Now Microsoft is touted by Wall Street, they're making money hand over fist, but their main product is roundly trashed even my MS fans. What's wrong with this picture?

This can't end well. I hope Ballmer and the boys figure it out soon.

Vista has been perfectly fine for me for the last year (64-bit installation on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ w/4GB of RAM). I also splurged for the ultimate edition...

Zero problems, all my games run perfectly other than my old 16-bit games (which i have an older computer for), and as long as the pr0n works, it's all good.

I'm running vista business 64bit at home with no issues. if i were to pick a software company to bash, it would be adobe. I think Acrobat is the worst steaming pile of crippled (unless you pay $500 for Professional) bloatware i've ever seen, and they charge just as much as an operating system for it.

In all fairness it's impossible to write a piece of software that doesn't break and how are they forcing you to buy it? I've never purchased an MS OS myself. And when has MS actually charged you for fixes to the OS?

I still keep around a few spare WinXP keys from trashed computers for this exact reason.
WinXP MCE SP3 > Vista SP1
I'll only switch over if I need 4GB of RAM, except vista eats 1GB, so 3GB in reality.

The biggest winner of it all is Intel, they are now 100% The Man in PC/Mac business. AMD-ATI isn't even close. The difference to all the other "The Man" companies is that Intel actually makes good stuff.

+1 for hating adobe acrobat, no one wants to use it, but there's no alternative.

Maybe if MS would fix vista rather than 'prop it up' with an expensive ad campaign....

Not that OSX doesn't have it's own set of security holes to fix.

Foxit Reader works and provides some decent features, it starts up a hell of a lot faster than Acrobat as well. I have to use Acrobat at work though.

To boot, once you get the cash and plunk down the insane amount it takes to license Acrobat, six months later, there is a new x.0 version that has usually 1-2 new features, and another 2-3 C notes to move to.

I can't really bash MS. Their server division knows how to do operating systems right, while the division that makes the client OSes leaves me scratching my head.

I can see Vista being a competitor provided:

1: Ditch the activation thing. Its pointless, and piracy is a GOOD thing to get Vista back onto desktops so more copies get sold. Companies don't pirate MS stuff because its so easy for a disgruntled employee to trigger a BSA audit. The more people using the OS, the more people buying upgrades to the next. If activation has to be done, it should only need to be done once in a machine's lifetime, and a validation code put into some permanent part of BIOS. Of course, once a machine is validated for an OEM copy, VL copies never should demand activation.

2: Dump all editions except Home Premium, Enterprise, and Ultimate. Home Premium for users, intended so they don't shoot themselves in the foot, Administrator non password protected, and accessible in safe mode (although a clued user can set an Admin password). Ultimate for pretty much everyone else, and Enterprise aimed at corporate machines, stressing compliance and security, over tons of features. Charge $99 for Home, $150 for Enterprise (or keep it as VL only), and $199 for Ultimate.

3: Offer two modes of install, the default which installs the usual stuff, and a minimum install, just like Windows Server 2008, which installs the bare minimum, and if the user wants something, they can add it.

4: Get Vista to run well in 256 to 512MB of RAM, and low HD space. It doesn't have to run Aero, just be able to put up a Windows 2000 or Windows XP style UI.

5: Integrate VirtualPC into Vista, so 16 bit apps can be run on a 64 bit OS.

6: Have BitLocker have a mode where it can work with a passphrase and no TPM at boot, so one can use it for lower end laptops, and not have to have a USB flash drive with them everywhere.

7: Allow for hiding of users in the logon dialog, so one can do like in XP, hit control-alt-delete twice, type the username in for access. This is great for machines that have limited user accounts.

8: Allow licensing of Windows PE, so people and companies can make bootable rescue disks easily.

9: Consider putting back DoubleSpace/Drivespace disk compression functionality to allow users to obtain more space on the EeePC and other small platforms. The file compression is OK, but not that great.

10: Allow for encrypted backups, where a backup is only readable by selected users, so on a restore a user needs to use their username/password (or the Administrator account) to decrypt. This would allow for one to backup all their stuff to DVD periodically, but not worry about it falling into the wrong hands.

11: MS needs to put the "cool" back into their stuff. Windows 95 was "cool". People stood in line to buy copies of the product. This is something MS lost. The only "cool" product from MS (as perceived by the public) is the Xbox 360.

12: Merge redundant stuff. The Zune really needs to be able to work with WM-DRM files from music stores which work with Windows Mobile platforms.

13: Make a new filesystem on parity with ZFS and the features offered. NTFS has been great, but times have changed.

14: Create a new executable format so an executable only needs one file, just like .NET stuff, and all the required DLLs can be bundled in it. Take a look at Thinstall how to do this stuff right.

I could go on all day... yeesh.
