Do you drive 55 because of high gas prices?

I have learned from cycling that you can move well below the speed limit, and not be a hindrance to traffic or compromise your safety. So with high gas prices I have taken to driving 55 on interstates since my car gets 15% better gas mileage compared to going 70. I found this site has a useful calculator to determine your savings per hour by driving slower. Anyone else driving slower because of high gas prices?

Driving slower may not help your gas mileage. It depends on how your particular car is tuned. Many get their best mileage at 65 or 70.

Just like when you're pedaling (optimum gear/cadence for you), there is an optimum efficient speed for your car.

No. I drive 60-65 because I just don't see any need to go faster. I'm not going to get there much (if any) sooner if I do 75-80, and since Californians are completely clueless of the "keep right except to pass" concept, trying to drive faster is just an exercise in stress and frustration anyway.

So I relax, take it easy, and park myself in the slow lane.

I don't even really pay much attention to the gas mileage of the cars I drive. *shrug*

No. I like to drive the speed limit irregardless of the price of gas.

I highly doubt this. While overdrive transmissions have indeed increased maximum mpg speeds, it is still lower than 65 for all cars. I'll bet my best bike against your's on this issue.

I drive 55 because the guy in front of me can't see the limit sign that clearly says 65MPH and won't pull over for faster traffic.

Going 55-60 is natural for me. I don't like going fast. I feel less safe. Speed kills. Its rare on a freeway I go faster than 65. I have always been that way. Those same feelings sort of carry over to my cycling. / Speed kills and impatience turns motorists into road ragers.

Incorrect. I seriously doubt there is one vehicle on the road for which this is remotely accurate.

I drive the posted speed limit and sometimes about 5 mph slower. I figure that the pre-established safe limit is good enough for me.

One exception: Recently, I had my car repaired (the bazillionth time, with much free work involved, and it's a long story). The mechanic rode on the test ride with me to see if we could trip the engine light again, after that repair. I was downright abusive to the car, just to see what would happen. At one point, I hit 80-85 mph on the freeway, and I was seriously worried about safety and a possible ticket.

Sad part was that there was some MF in an SUV beating me. Now, that kind of thing will kill your gas mileage...not to mention killing any innocent pedestrain or bicyclist who happens to cross that person's path. (I'm sure he/she ain't goin' slow in the neighborhoods, either.)
When I ride, the troubles just roll off my back.

I drive 55 'cause it's the law and I'm in no hurry to get where I'm going... eventually. So I want to enjoy each moment I have here, without rushing and hurrying through all tensed up.

Oh, YOU'RE in a hurry? Leave earlier, don't stop at Starbucks and chill the hell out, it's not always about you.

I tried all that crap for two tanks. Starting off slowly from lights and stop signs, driving 50 on our country back roads instead of 60. Driving 60 on the interstate instead of 65-70, riding with the windows up, AC off, and vent blowing... you name it.

I got 29.9 mpg for both of those tanks, and I get 33mpg if I drive normally. Needless to say, I drive normally now.

Due to fuel prices I have slowed down. My truck mpg goes to poop over 70mph so I try to stay just below that speed.

I stay around the speed limit. I drive a box on wheels, so gas mileage sucks no matter what. I briefly read over an article the other day saying that we should pay attention to gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon. Apparently it was a better assessment of what we pay to travel from A to B. I briefly read it at work, so I may have that completely wrong.

I drive 5 over the speed limit when not in city limits, sometimes 10 over on the freeway depending on how fast traffic is moving that day. I still get better than the stated mpg and I can't stand driving slow.
