    What is going on???

It seems to me that this summer has seen more than its share of crazy stuff going on in this city. A few weeks ago, a guy ran into a police station about 10 minutes' ride from my apartment and proceeded to stab to death six police officers before being restrained.

Then there is the sad story of Diana O'Brien, the Canadian model who was found dead in her apartment building after only two weeks in the city. (Note regarding that story: Most apartment security guards seem mostly there for show, and it's not surprising that the security in her building was ineffective).

Then the other day, I was walking down the street and saw a man chasing after another man, waving a machete and screaming. The man he was chasing managed to get away.

And just this weekend, I was in a cab and saw a man having a fight with a woman, and proceeded to knock her down and attempt to club her with a U-lock. Fortunately, some people managed to restrain him before he actually made contact.

I'm getting a bit freaked out, honestly. I don't know if it's the heat or what, but whatever it is, stop now please.

Might be the heat, or the current crappy state of the world. Whatever it is, keep safe and run away from whackos with U-locks!!!

Yeah, no kidding. I'm starting to think Beijing's got the right idea with the pre-Olympics clampdown. Looking forward to winter... (when, according to an oil & gas industry veteran I just talked to, oil will be at $170 a barrel and heading up)

It's the heat. People get way more obnoxious in the summer. (Just look at me, posting in the middle of the night on my time! Right now, I have the option of sleeping during the hottest hours and roaming at night.)

My boyfriend made the foolish mistake of conceiving a child with a mentally ill woman many years ago. Every summer, she completely flips out, doing something just beyond what we previously imagined possible.

I also fear for my life when driving a car. Too many nutjobs with no A/C who want to either run you down or shoot you.

It starts in May. Doesn't end 'til mid-August. Hang in there.
When I ride, the troubles just roll off my back.

Dont' worry, stuff like this has always been happening. Just that the media is presenting more of this now than before. Part of the "program of fear" to get everyone tense and upset and more willing to vote our rights and freedoms away. Notice that no one even noticed what happened with the telecom pardon bill? So much for habeus corpus and search and seizure without a warrant.

Anyway, all that fear-mongering's to get you to vote for a government that'll "protect" you. Just look into who owns 99.9% of the media and who are the owners and directors of those 7 mega-corporations.

I have to say that all seems a bit jaded and paranoid (can you be both?) from where I'm sitting, since two of the things that freaked me out are things that I witnessed directly, another occurred within 10 minutes of my house, and another was the murder of a fellow Canadian the Canadian community is not really that big here.

I don't doubt that this sort of thing has always happened, but this stuff doesn't feel distant and part of an amorphous "program of fear." It's scary and I can see it happening with my own eyes.

And I have no illusions about the status of media in China, either. As for voting for a government that will protect me, that really doesn't apply in this case, for obvious reasons.
