Time travel

Say you can travel through time.

Do you go forward, or backwards?

Depends on what you set the thing to, and whether you installed the flux capacitor in or out of phase, I would imagine.

I'd go back to 1977 and skip the navy.

221 BCE to Qin Shi Huang's palace to photograph his court.

100,000 AD would be cool too, to see what man has evolved (or devolved) into.

Back in time a few hundred years. Take the knowledge of the lightbulb, industrial revolution and computers back with you. Then return back here and see how things are different

That kinda depends on the conditions... do i have to stay? Why can't I go to ten places in the past?

I love scifi... don't get me wrong. Right now I am on the sixth book of a nine book scifi series. Which I read before...

But.. of all the goofy ideas in scifi, time travel is one of the goofiest; if not the goofiest.

You travel through space AND time. So to go back even a day is to travel hundreds of thousands of miles back thatta away... The idea was to create an opening, like a door. In reality you need something more like a highway.

By way of comparison, warp drive will be easy.

BTW there is a difference between time travel and changing your previous lifetime. To not join the Navy, you would have to kidnap yourself and torture yourself until your past self decided not to join the Navy. Also I believe in the Futurama (No paradox's allowed. The doom variable will self heal time) and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy theories (If time travel were to ever have been invented, someone would use it to go to the past and then invent it themselves. Therefore time travel has to be invented at all time periods at the same time. We don't have time travel. Therefore time travel (at least to the past) is impossible.

Time travel to the future is possible by getting close to the speed of light. Actually, your time perspective slows down in relation to everyone else. But the effect is travel to the future on a one-way ticket.

I would go backwards and change a few things about my life in order to make sure I lived my life with the person I was meant to be with... and am convinced I should still be with.

Or, perhaps to visit with one of the great minds of the past, to see if they were as great as we think, or if we have magnified their influence based on a few writings... someone like Aristotle or maybe Thoreau would be better since I could at least speak his language.

Although, I must admit moving forward into the unknown would be an interesting adventure as well, to see what is yet to be learned/invented/created... although I am not all that convinced that the direction of mankind is forward from here.

Id leave a note to my 1984 self saying "buy MSFT"

Or a more thought provoking task- stop the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914.
This triggered WWI. Had it not happened, the rest of the century may have turned out much
different.

I'd take a laptop and portable scanner back to the Library of Alexandria and copy everything before it burned.

I doubt that would change much. The Brits were already fighting German proxies in Iraq and tensions were rising. All it would take is a match, and there were people who had matches and wanted to use them.

Yeah, you're right on that. I guess I'll just buy 1984 Microsoft stock. Even better- 1974 Walmart stock!
