I'm tired of negative news

Why do people always focus on it? Are we really that sadistic? Finally, some positive news on Forbes (though I'm sure P-Cad will chime in and offer his pessimistic views ):

Encouraged by a weak dollar and a belief in the resiliency of the U.S. economy

Stocks soar on drop in oil

EBay 2Q profit rises 22 percent

There was a lot more than this, too.

"News" is the remarkable, the unusual happenings. When good things are news, beware!

I can't watch the evening news anymore. It's all doom and gloom. I can't stand it.

For a taste of the other extreme, try this article from the September 1999 issue of Wired.

Here's the deal, the longer you ignore stuff, the worse it gets. We Americans have had their head in the sand so long that we don't know which way is up anymore.

Just remember that news isn't told, its sold. Ergo, the more negative and sensationalistic, the better.

This is very true. I have to say, for as much crap as he catches about it, I am very grateful to FatA** for helping me "wake up". He and I have different views about many things, but I wouldn't be free of consumer debt today if I hadn't started reading his threads in P&R fortelling the mortgage crisis. That's what got me thinking - and doing.

I'm sick of the bad news, too. It just generates too much fear and overreaction. I'm all for straightening things out financially and anticipating life's hazards in any situation. It's just a good idea, in general. But when every thing on the news focuses on a bad event, it just gets overwhelming. It's also a good way to generate panic amongst the masses.

I'm sorry, you've confused Fox News with "news", and never the twain shall meet.

There are a few websites that I really like in Buffalo that report on just the good things that happen in the city. A lot of the major cities have similar things. It makes me feel a little better whenever I check it out.

A bit of devil's advocacy here:

A lot of the reason why people are ignoring stuff is because there are so many people on the Net and real life yelling, at the top of their figurative (and literal) lungs for their causes, whether the causes have merit, or they are to stroke someone's self-righteousness or fatten their wallet. People are tired of hearing "You coward, you servant, you blind man, why are you not doing anything about X?" from every street corner, and from so many websites, that in reaction, they get tired of it, and vote status quo (no matter how bad it is) because they are sick of it.

You just have to recognize that everything is never as bad as they say or as good. The extremes are what sells but the middle is generally what is real. Don't ignore the news but get your news from many different sources and then you decide what to believe. The worse case is the people that watch one channel and believe that everything they are told is accurate, fair and balanced.

When gas is up, every news station is covering it with lots of stock photos of pumps and anal lube.

When gas goes back down, no news station covers this at all.
