What's up with the heads-in-shark avatars?

Like the title says... I have seen so many ppl using those lately, I had to ask.

It's an old sketch made famous by Chevy Chase on SNL where he played the "land shark" and would knock on people's doors posing as a Candygram, UNICEF, etc. The victim would inevitably wind up in the mouth as this big shark came through the door and chomped away. It made for one of the best openers to SNL (below):

I guess a few folks here would like to terrorize their neighbors

[ open on interior, Woman's Apartment, 2:00 a.m. ]

[ doorbell rings ]

Woman: Who is it?

Voice At Door: [ drawn-out pause ] Uh.. trick or treat?

Woman: [ gets up and walks cautiously to the door ] Look, it's two o'clock in the morning. Halloween's over! Shouldn't you be in bed by now?

Voice At Door: [ stuttering ] Mrs. Bar- Barsen- Bargen- Barsen..?

Woman: There is no Mrs. Bargenbarson here!

Voice At Door: [ pause ] Candy-Gram?

Woman: Look, I'm all out of candy! I gave it all away! Now, go home!

Voice At Door: UNI- UNICEF, ma'am?

Woman: UNICEF?

Voice At Door: UNICEF.

Woman: Well, that's different..

[ Woman grabs her purse and opens the door - as she does, the Land Shark peers in, gobbles her up and drags her into the hall. ]

[ Land Shark re-enters the apartment, and stares at the camera. Suddenly, Chevy Chase pokes his head and arm out of the mouth ]

Chevy Chase: "Live, from New York, it's Saturday Night!"

You're welcome...

Keep in mind that pretty much every one of the nice folks with the land shark avatar were not even born yet when that episode aired!

That halloween saw an impressive amount of land sharks sinking their rubber teeth into unsuspecting virgins in the East Village where I went to school.

To put things in further perspective, that year, my first road build was a custom Reynolds 531SL frame with Campy Super Record, Mavic Aluminum Rims, Clement TT tubular tires. The bike is still hanging up in the bedroom.
